Lassen VNP, May 2025

Hello, We are making a trip to Oregon, Northern California May 15 - 24. Original plan was to visit Lassen VNP around 5/20. However, according to previous years, it appears that the western entrances may not even be open. Any chances there would be anything open to see during this time? Thanks!

Lassen Volcanic National Park in mid-May can be somewhat limited due to snow and late-season road closures. Typically, the main western entrances, like the Park Headquarters near Manzanita Lake and the northwest highway entrances, may still be closed or only partially open around May 15-20, depending on snowpack that year. Access can vary significantly year to year.

However, there are still options for enjoying the park at this time:

  • Manzanita Lake Area: If the entrance and roads around Manzanita Lake are open, you can enjoy short walks, photography, and views of Lassen Peak. This area is usually one of the first to become accessible in spring.
  • Camping & Picnic: Some lower elevation campgrounds and picnic areas may be open. Check the park website or call ahead to confirm which sites are available.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Spring is excellent for spotting wildlife such as deer, birds, and possibly black bears emerging from hibernation, even along partially open roads.

Roads to higher elevations, including the main highway through the park and access to places like Bumpass Hell, Lassen Peak Trailhead, and Summit Lake, are likely still snow-covered and may not be passable without winter gear or snowshoeing experience.

Other considerations:

  • Check the official Lassen Volcanic National Park website for current road and entrance conditions in mid-May.
  • Bring warm clothing and be prepared for snow or icy patches, even at lower elevations.
  • If access is too limited, you could consider exploring nearby areas such as Hat Creek Rim, Burney Falls, or Shasta Lake for outdoor activities and hiking.

In summary, while high-elevation trails and main scenic routes may not be accessible in mid-May, the lower elevation areas like Manzanita Lake often offer opportunities for short hikes, wildlife viewing, and scenic photography. It’s a quieter, off-season time, but still worthwhile if you’re flexible and prepared for snow conditions.
