Setting up Mobile Apps for China

Hi, Is it ok to install and register for the Chinese Apps like WeChat, Alipay, Didi etc. before i go to China, if i wanted to pre-book tickets/reservations before arriving in China or ESim setup, or should i wait till i've got my ESim setup and activated and then activate those apps?

Yes, you can install Chinese apps like WeChat, Alipay, Didi, and others before arriving in China, but there are some important considerations regarding registration and functionality.

Many of these apps allow installation and partial registration overseas, but full functionality—especially for payments and local bookings—often requires a Chinese mobile number and verification through SMS or eSIM. Some features, like linking a local bank card or topping up your account, will not work until your number is active in China.

Here’s a detailed breakdown:

  • Installation before arrival: You can download WeChat, Alipay, Didi, and other apps from your usual app store. You can even create an account with your international number for preliminary use, such as chatting in WeChat or browsing services.
  • Registration and verification: For services like mobile payment in Alipay or WeChat Pay, you will likely need a Chinese phone number for SMS verification. Some apps allow linking an international card, but the experience is limited compared to local accounts.
  • Pre-booking tickets/reservations: You may be able to make certain bookings (like train tickets or attractions) using an international number, but payment might require a local payment method. For reliable pre-booking, it’s recommended to have an active Chinese eSIM or SIM card with verified apps.

Recommended approach:

  • Install the apps before arriving to familiarize yourself with them and set up basic accounts.
  • Activate your Chinese eSIM or SIM card upon arrival.
  • Link your Chinese phone number to the apps to enable full functionality including mobile payments, ticket purchases, and ride-hailing.

This approach allows you to prepare in advance while ensuring that you can use all features seamlessly once in China.
