Whitewater Rafting in Fort Collins in July
I am doing a National Parks trip with my family this summer. We are starting and ending in Denver. Currently I have a night booked in Fort Collins on our way back from Cody, WY. We would LOVE to go whitewater rafting before heading into the city for our last few days. My husband and I have done up to class IV-V rapids in Costa Rica and we have gone rafting in ME and in the Amazon in Ecuador. My children now 15 & 13 have previously gone rafting in Costa Rica and in Ecuador these were max rapids of class III-IV. They both loved it. We are looking for an exciting SAFE river.
The three that I have found seem to have what we are looking for are and the locations are basically the same for all so I am having a hard time deciding which company to go with. Help!
A Wanderlust Adventure - $99 for their Blast of Whitewater trip Class III-IV
A1 Whitewater - $90 for their Wile & Scenic trip Class II-IV
Mountain White water - $115 for their Plunge trip Class II-IV
Fort Collins is a great base for whitewater rafting in Northern Colorado, especially in July when river flows are typically strong but manageable. Since your family has prior rafting experience and your kids are comfortable with Class III rapids, you’ll want a trip that offers excitement without unnecessary risk. Here’s a breakdown to help you choose between the companies you mentioned.
Considerations for Choosing a Company
- Safety & Reputation: All three companies are well-established and follow strict safety protocols. Check online reviews for comments on guides’ professionalism, safety instructions, and responsiveness to families with teens.
- Rapids & Excitement Level: You mentioned wanting Class III-IV rapids. All three trips offer this range, but consider the balance between continuous rapids versus scenic stretches. If you prefer a mix of adrenaline and sightseeing, a company that emphasizes scenic sections alongside rapids might be ideal.
- Cost & Duration: Prices range from $90–$115. Sometimes the slightly higher price includes longer trips, more rapids, or extras such as shuttle service, gear, or snacks.
- Family-Friendly Guides: Since your kids are teenagers, guides who are engaging and experienced with families can make a big difference in enjoyment and safety.
Comparison of the Options
- A Wanderlust Adventure ($99, Blast of Whitewater, Class III-IV): Likely more adrenaline-focused, good for experienced paddlers, with consistent rapids.
- A1 Whitewater ($90, Wile & Scenic, Class II-IV): Offers a combination of moderate rapids and scenic views; slightly easier overall with Class II sections, which may give your teens a bit of variety without constant intensity.
- Mountain Whitewater ($115, Plunge, Class II-IV): Slightly more expensive but probably includes a more comprehensive experience, possibly longer stretches on the river or extra services (snacks, shuttle, safety gear). Balanced between rapids and sightseeing.
Recommendations
- For the most thrilling ride emphasizing rapids: consider A Wanderlust Adventure.
- For a balance of fun rapids and sightseeing, especially with teens: A1 Whitewater or Mountain Whitewater may be preferable.
- Check each company’s cancellation policy, shuttle convenience to your Fort Collins hotel, and whether they provide wetsuits or splash jackets (important in early July when water can still be cold).
- Book early, as July weekends are popular and can sell out quickly.
All three companies are solid choices; it comes down to whether you want maximum rapids (A Wanderlust), a scenic mix (A1 Whitewater), or a slightly more premium experience with extras (Mountain Whitewater). Given your family’s experience, any of these should provide a safe and fun adventure.
