Car hire November
I have looked at car hire for the next few months and the price is reasonable. However I'm coming in mid November and any price for hire cars from about June onwards are around 4 times the cost. Is this just because it is so far out or is that a normal cost for that time of year? I'm sure I paid way less when I visited a few years ago.
Car rental pricing in Fairbanks (and Alaska in general) can vary significantly depending on the season, demand, and how far in advance you are booking. November in Alaska falls into the shoulder season—after the peak summer tourist season but before the winter holiday rush. Here’s some insight into why prices might appear higher than expected:
Seasonal Demand:
- June through September is the peak tourist season in Alaska, and rental car fleets are generally larger to accommodate demand. Prices are relatively predictable.
- By November, many rental companies reduce their fleets for winter storage, meaning fewer vehicles are available, which drives up prices.
- Additionally, November marks the start of winter conditions: snow, ice, and shorter daylight hours. Vehicles equipped for winter driving (4WD, AWD, or cars with winter tires) are limited and often more expensive.
Booking in Advance:
- Booking very far in advance (e.g., 6 months out) sometimes shows higher rates because companies know there’s guaranteed demand and limited winter inventory.
- Last-minute bookings for November could sometimes be cheaper if rental companies are trying to fill remaining vehicles, but this is risky, especially for a destination like Fairbanks where winter readiness is essential.
Other Factors:
- Specialized vehicles (SUVs, 4WD, AWD) needed for winter roads naturally cost more than standard sedans.
- Insurance rates, added winter equipment fees, and airport pickup surcharges can all contribute to higher apparent costs.
- Comparison with past years: prices have generally increased over the last few years, and winter car rentals now often include mandatory winter tires or chains in Alaska.
In summary, the higher cost you’re seeing for November is normal for that time of year, primarily due to reduced fleet size, winter driving requirements, and limited vehicle availability. It’s not unusual for winter rentals in Alaska to be several times more expensive than peak summer rentals, especially if you’re booking well in advance and looking for a vehicle equipped for winter conditions.
Tips:
- Consider booking directly with major Alaskan car rental agencies that offer winter-ready vehicles to ensure safety.
- Check if off-airport rental locations are cheaper, though availability might be more limited.
- Keep an eye on flexible cancellation options in case prices drop closer to your travel date.
