Smoking
Any hotels or resorts in destin that still allow smoking on the balconies? They are getting harder and harder to find.
Smoking policies in Destin have become much more restrictive in recent years. Most major hotels, resorts, and condo complexes are now fully non-smoking, including balconies, due to insurance rules, guest complaints, and updated property policies. That said, there are still a few places where smoking is allowed on private balconies—or where individual owners may permit it if you rent through a third-party platform.
Below is a detailed overview of what to expect and where you may still find smoking-friendly balcony options.
Important note: Even at properties that allow balcony smoking, rules often vary by building, unit owner, or management company. Always confirm directly before booking.
- Some individually owned condos at Sterling Shores, Pelican Beach Resort, or similar condo properties – The resorts themselves are officially non-smoking on balconies, but certain owner-managed units (via VRBO or Airbnb) may still permit smoking outdoors on the balcony. Check each unit’s “House Rules.” These are your best chance for a balcony-friendly option in Destin proper.
- Older condo complexes in the Crystal Beach and Holiday Isle areas – A few long-established, low-rise properties still permit balcony smoking, especially in buildings without shared interior hallways. These are scattered across the area, but availability varies and many units have individually updated rules. Contact the management before booking.
- Some smaller motels/inns along Scenic 98 – A handful of non-chain, older beachside inns may still permit balcony smoking due to looser policies. These tend to be more basic accommodations rather than full-service resorts.
Most of the major name-brand beachfront properties in Destin have gone completely non-smoking, including balconies. This includes many well-known resorts and hotels.
If you broaden your search outside Destin (within 10–25 minutes), you may find more balcony-friendly options in Fort Walton Beach or Okaloosa Island.
- Okaloosa Island (Fort Walton Beach) condo rentals – Several older gulf-front buildings still allow smoking on balconies in select units. Because many are individually owned, rules vary widely. Some complexes have designated smoking balconies only.
- Smaller independent hotels along Santa Rosa Boulevard – These properties tend to have fewer restrictions compared to Destin’s larger full-service resorts. Many still allow balcony smoking.
- Private home and townhouse rentals – If your priority is smoking outdoors, renting a home with a private deck or porch is the most guaranteed option, as owners are more flexible and rarely restrict outside smoking.
If balcony smoking is essential, the safest strategy is to look at individually owned condos or private rentals where the owner explicitly states that smoking on the balcony is allowed. Resort-managed units and branded hotels rarely permit it anymore.
To avoid issues or fines, always confirm smoking policies directly with the unit owner or management before you book. Destin’s policies have tightened significantly, but with the right type of rental, you can still find smoking-friendly balcony options.
