Travel Agency’s

I am in my 70’s and am specifically wishing to experience ancient China, the red Panda., terraced rice patties l, the cormorant's, that dive and fish for the fishermen, the water villages, etc. I am not very interested in modern China, or getting stuck in a tour that sounds good but doesn’t really meet my criteria. I am not the most active 70 year old, but still get around.

I want the very best smaller group experience. I wish to really emerge in the culture and history. Can anyone recommend a tour or a company?

I would be a single traveler.

Thanks.

For a traveler in their 70s seeking a deeply cultural and natural experience of China, focusing on traditional life, wildlife, and scenic landscapes, small-group or private tours are highly recommended. Given your interests—ancient China, red pandas, terraced rice paddies, cormorant fishing, and water villages—you will want a travel agency that specializes in tailored, immersive experiences rather than standard mass-tour itineraries.

Here are some options to consider:

  • WildChina – Offers private and small-group tours across China, emphasizing cultural immersion and local experiences. They can organize trips to Sichuan to see red pandas, Yunnan for rice terraces, and visits to traditional villages. Their tours are flexible for slower-paced travel.
  • Exodus Travels – China – Provides active yet moderate small-group tours, including countryside exploration, traditional villages, and wildlife. They cater to travelers seeking authentic cultural experiences.
  • China Odyssey Tours – Specializes in private bespoke tours that can include ancient towns, rice terraces (like Longsheng in Guangxi or Yuanyang in Yunnan), and water villages such as Zhouzhuang or Nanxun. They can design itineraries suitable for less active travelers.

For specific experiences:

  • Red Panda Viewing: Visit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan; they have red pandas and can arrange less strenuous walking tours.
  • Terraced Rice Paddies: Yuanyang in Yunnan or Longsheng near Guilin are spectacular. Opt for small-group tours with easy walks or vehicle access to viewpoints.
  • Cormorant Fishing Villages: Located near Guilin and Yangshuo; private boat tours allow you to observe the fishermen and their birds without extensive walking.
  • Water Villages: Nanxun, Xitang, and Wuzhen are more authentic and less crowded than others. Overnight stays in local guesthouses enhance immersion.

Additional tips:

  • Request private or very small-group tours to ensure comfortable pacing.
  • Ask for tour guides who speak English and are familiar with cultural history.
  • Check if the agency can include gentle transportation between remote scenic spots to reduce walking strain.
  • Booking a single traveler-friendly tour avoids additional fees for solo travelers in shared groups.

Overall, choosing a boutique or bespoke tour operator that focuses on culture, nature, and slower travel pace will maximize your experience without the stress of mass tourism.
