afternoon layover in beijing.
hello, i have a layover in beijing (pek). i land at 14.35 and the departure is at 00.50. so i have10 hours to go to the center.
i want to leave the city at 21, so i have enough time to go back to the airport, so i should have around 3-4 hours to see something.
since it's late afternoon, i won't be able to visit forbidden city or other places that closes early.
i have some questions.
1. where do you recomment to spend 4 hours for walking and eating? i would also like to take some pictures of illuminated temples or monuments.
2. can i use my italian credit card to pay for the airport express train and metro station? i read and article where beijing is becoming open to international cards.
thank you
With a layover in Beijing from 14:35 to 00:50, giving you roughly 3–4 hours in the city after accounting for travel back to the airport, you can still enjoy some evening exploration and photography of illuminated landmarks.
1. Recommended areas for walking, eating, and photos:
- Wangfujing Street: Famous shopping street with vibrant street food stalls, cafes, and modern shops. Great for evening photos with lights and signage.
- Tiananmen Square and the National Centre for the Performing Arts: The square itself and surrounding monuments are beautifully illuminated at night. The National Centre, known as "The Giant Egg," has striking reflections and lighting.
- Houhai Lakes and Nanluoguxiang: For a combination of canals, traditional hutongs, and small bars/restaurants. The lantern-lit streets create a charming atmosphere for evening photography.
- Temple of Heaven park: While the interior may be closed, the exterior and surrounding area can be photographed and enjoyed during dusk and early evening.
2. Regarding transportation and payment:
- You can use the Airport Express train to reach the city in about 20–30 minutes to Dongzhimen station.
- For the metro, most stations still primarily accept Beijing Transportation Cards or cash. International credit cards are accepted at some newer machines, especially at major tourist-friendly stations, but this may not be guaranteed everywhere.
- To be safe, carry a small amount of Chinese Yuan (CNY) for metro tickets and smaller purchases, or purchase a rechargeable Beijing Transportation Card at the airport, which you can top up with cash.
Additional tips:
- Allow at least 1.5–2 hours to return to PEK, including airport security and potential traffic delays.
- Focus on one or two areas (for example, Wangfujing + Tiananmen Square) rather than trying to see too many sites, to enjoy a relaxed evening.
- Street food and casual dining in Wangfujing or Nanluoguxiang are convenient options if you want to sample Beijing flavors without taking too much time.
In summary, with 3–4 hours in the city, the best approach is to pick one or two central areas for walking, photos, and dinner, while keeping transportation and return time in mind. Bring cash for flexibility, as credit card acceptance is still inconsistent on the metro and at smaller vendors.
