SFO United to Alaska connecting time

Hi everyone

We are a bit older but seasoned travelers. We travel light and will have carry on only. IF (the big if)

our arriving flights are on time and we have our boarding passes can we make it from Term. #3 united domestic to Term #1 alaska domestic in less than two hours. Will be arriving from ACV. Same timing on the way back. Have not yet booked flights.

Thanks

At San Francisco International Airport (SFO), connecting between Terminal 3 (United Airlines domestic) and Terminal 1 (Alaska Airlines domestic) in under two hours is generally feasible, but there are some important factors to consider.

Since you are seasoned travelers and traveling light with carry-on only, you have an advantage. If your arriving flight is on time and you already have boarding passes for your Alaska flight, you can avoid checking in or waiting at a counter, which saves significant time.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The terminals are separate, so you will need to factor in walking time and security. Terminal 3 and Terminal 1 are connected via the AirTrain, which is free and quick, but you also have some walking between the AirTrain station and security checkpoints.
  • Security wait times can vary, but using TSA PreCheck (if you have it) significantly reduces wait times. Without PreCheck, allow extra time.
  • Walking and AirTrain transfer typically take about 15–20 minutes under normal conditions. Factor in 10–30 minutes for security, depending on the time of day and crowding.

Tips for a smooth transfer:

  • Keep an eye on your arrival gate and the AirTrain route. Head straight to Terminal 1 without stopping.
  • Have boarding passes ready and be prepared for standard TSA checks.
  • Check the airline’s minimum connection time recommendation. Alaska Airlines suggests at least 45 minutes for domestic connections, but 1 hour is safer.
  • If your incoming flight is delayed, even by a few minutes, it could make the transfer tight, so plan accordingly.

On the way back, the same logic applies. With only carry-on luggage and boarding passes in hand, two hours should generally be sufficient, though it leaves little margin for delays. If you can, consider a slightly longer layover for peace of mind, especially if you want a relaxed transfer rather than rushing.
