3 nights/3.5 days in Chengdu and surroundings

Hi there,

We’re a group of six friends traveling to China in the second half of May. Our first stop will be Chengdu (Sichuan), where we’ll be staying for nearly four days (three nights). We’re trying to decide whether to base ourselves entirely in Chengdu and take day trips, or to spend one night out of town. Based on our research, we’ve identified a few points of interest and would love your recommendations:

1. Panda Reserves

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (in town)

Dujiangyan Panda Base

Bifengxia Panda Base near Ya’an

Which of the three would you recommend for the best experience?

2. Buddhist Sites:

Mount Emei (Emei Shan), which might require an overnight stay

Leshan Grand Buddha, which seems more doable as a day trip

Which would you recommend, especially considering our limited time?

3. Tibetan-Inspired Towns

We’re also intrigued by Songpan and Tagong. We understand that visiting Tagong would likely require an overnight stay. Songpan seems to be more accessible—would it be feasible as a day trip or overnight from Chengdu?

We were considering combining a visit to the Bifengxia Panda Base with a night in Tagong, since they seem to be in the same direction. Another alternative would be to skip the Tibetan towns and instead visit Emei Shan, staying overnight there.

Our goal is to spend a maximum of one night outside Chengdu, so we’re looking for the best possible combination of experiences.

Thanks so much in advance for any suggestions you may have!

With 3 nights and roughly 3.5 days in Chengdu, you’ll need to balance travel time with experiences to maximize your stay without feeling rushed. Here’s a detailed recommendation based on your interests:

1. Panda Reserves

All three panda bases offer unique experiences, but considering your limited time:

  • Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding – Best for convenience and seeing pandas up close early in the morning when they are most active. Perfect for a half-day visit without leaving the city.
  • Dujiangyan Panda Base – Smaller and less crowded, but requires about 1–1.5 hours travel each way from central Chengdu. Good for a quieter experience if you want to avoid crowds.
  • Bifengxia Panda Base – Near Ya’an, requires a longer drive (around 2–3 hours one way), usually combined with other destinations in the western Sichuan route.

Recommendation: For your short stay, prioritize the Chengdu Research Base in the morning and optionally add Dujiangyan if you want a second panda experience.

2. Buddhist Sites

  • Leshan Giant Buddha – About 2 hours from Chengdu by car or train. Can easily be done as a day trip (half a day for the Buddha plus some walking or a short boat ride). Does not require an overnight stay.
  • Mount Emei (Emei Shan) – Requires an overnight stay for a comfortable visit, especially if you want to explore the upper temples and enjoy sunrise views. Travel time is around 2–3 hours each way.

Recommendation: Given your goal of limiting overnight trips, visit Leshan as a day trip and skip Emei Shan for this short itinerary.

3. Tibetan-Inspired Towns

  • Songpan – About 6–7 hours from Chengdu; a day trip is not feasible. Requires an overnight stay and is more suitable for a longer Sichuan or Sichuan-Tibet trip.
  • Tagong – Roughly 8–9 hours from Chengdu, so visiting Tagong would require a significant time commitment. Only realistic if combined with a longer multi-day western Sichuan/Tibet trip.

Recommendation: For a 3-night stay, it is better to skip Tibetan towns entirely and focus on panda bases and Leshan for cultural and wildlife experiences.

Suggested Itinerary:

  • Day 1: Arrive in Chengdu. Explore city highlights (e.g., Jinli Street, Wuhou Shrine, Sichuan cuisine evening).
  • Day 2: Morning visit to Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Afternoon visit to Dujiangyan Panda Base or city activities.
  • Day 3: Day trip to Leshan Giant Buddha (depart early morning, return evening). Evening optional Sichuan hotpot or cultural show.
  • Day 4 (half day): Morning free for last-minute shopping or a tea house visit, then depart.

Summary: With only one potential overnight outside Chengdu, it’s more efficient to enjoy the pandas in and around Chengdu and do a single day trip to Leshan. Tibetan towns like Tagong or Songpan are better suited for longer itineraries in western Sichuan.
