With a short overnight visit to Washington DC, careful planning is key to maximizing your time. Since your train arrives at 9:00am and you leave at 3:00pm the next day, it’s best to focus on the major monuments, memorials, and one or two indoor attractions each day, balancing walking distance and interest level.

Here’s a suggested itinerary based on your list:

  • Day 1 (arrival day, Wednesday): Focus on the National Mall and nearby monuments since you’ll have most of the afternoon and evening. Visiting Arlington Cemetery can be optional depending on energy, but it’s doable if you take an early Metro or taxi.
    • Start with Arlington National Cemetery if you want a morning visit (tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Changing of the Guard).
    • Return to the Mall for the Washington Monument (timed tickets can be mid-morning or early afternoon).
    • Visit the White House exterior/photo op from Lafayette Park.
    • Walk the Memorials: World War II Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Jefferson Memorial. These are in walking distance along the Tidal Basin and Lincoln Memorial area.
  • Tips for Day 1:
    • Wear comfortable walking shoes; you’ll cover several miles.
    • Plan photo stops but keep moving to see all the memorials in daylight.
    • Bring water and snacks, as many memorials have no food options nearby.
  • Day 2 (departure day, Thursday): Focus on indoor attractions and Capitol-area tours before leaving at 3:00pm.
    • Start with a U.S. Capitol Tour in the morning (book in advance; allow 1–1.5 hours).
    • Visit the National Archives Museum to see the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights (near the Capitol).
    • Depending on remaining time, visit one Smithsonian museum of interest nearby (e.g., National Museum of American History or National Air and Space Museum). Note that you may have time for only one, given your departure.
  • Tips for Day 2:
    • Check timed entry requirements for the Capitol and National Archives; aim for morning slots.
    • Pack light, as bags may need to go through security at each site.
    • Leave the hotel or luggage storage early enough to catch your 3:00pm departure without rushing.

Additional notes:

  • Day 1 is monument-heavy but manageable if you pace yourself; early arrival at Arlington is optional if you prefer more time at the Mall.
  • Day 2 should focus on indoor tours and museums near the Capitol to avoid long transit times.
  • Consider starting Day 1 with the Tidal Basin loop (MLK, Jefferson, FDR memorials) then finishing at Lincoln and Korean War Memorials at sunset for great views and lighting.

This itinerary balances outdoor monument walking with indoor historical tours, fitting well within your limited overnight schedule while covering most of your key interests.
