Confused how to see Bell/Cathedral Rocks

We will be here in late November this year with 3 kids, ages 13,11,9. We don't want very strenous hikes or long, as we are passing through and only have 1 day. Every website I see has differing ways to see these 2 rocks. For example, for Bell Rock- is it better to take Bell Rock pathway or Bell Rock trail? For Cathedral is it advised for Templeton Trail or Back O beyond rd? I see so much different routes and I am not sure what is best for the kids. I also am assuming Devils Bridge is not a great idea for them? Thanks!

For a one-day visit to Sedona with kids aged 9–13, it’s best to choose shorter, easy-to-moderate trails that provide great views without exhausting the family. Here’s a detailed breakdown for Bell Rock and Cathedral Rock.

Bell Rock:

The Bell Rock area has two main options: the Bell Rock Pathway and the Bell Rock Trail.

  • Bell Rock Pathway: This is a wide, mostly flat trail suitable for families. It loops around the base of Bell Rock, offering great views and photo opportunities. Ideal for kids since it’s easy and not steep.
  • Bell Rock Trail: A slightly more challenging route that ascends partway up Bell Rock. The lower sections are manageable for your kids, but the steeper parts may be tricky. You can hike partway for a better view and turn around if needed.

Recommendation: For your family, start with the Pathway for a gentle walk and consider a short segment of the Trail if the kids are eager and it’s safe.

Cathedral Rock:

Cathedral Rock has a few options: the Templeton Trail (often referred to as the Cathedral Rock Trailhead) and routes accessed via Back O Beyond Road.

  • Cathedral Rock Trail (Templeton Trailhead): This is a short but steep trail (~1.2 miles round trip) that leads to the famous saddle between the rock formations. While steep in sections, it’s manageable for active kids with frequent rest stops. The views are iconic and worth the effort.
  • Back O Beyond Road approach: This route is longer, less defined, and not recommended for kids if you want a clear, easy path. It’s more suited to experienced hikers or those wanting a longer, off-trail adventure.

Recommendation: Use the Templeton Trailhead route to reach the saddle, but pace the hike and be prepared for short, steep climbs. Let the kids stop for photos and enjoy the views.

Devil’s Bridge:

While a popular Sedona hike, Devil’s Bridge is longer (~4.2 miles round trip) and has a narrow, exposed section near the bridge. With three kids, ages 9–13, this may be too strenuous and risky for a one-day visit, especially if you want to keep the day relaxed.

Suggested Itinerary for Your Day:

  • Morning: Bell Rock Pathway for a gentle walk, optionally adding a short segment of Bell Rock Trail.
  • Midday: Picnic lunch or snack at a viewpoint.
  • Afternoon: Cathedral Rock via Templeton Trailhead; hike only as far as comfortable for the kids, enjoying the saddle view.
  • Optional: Scenic drives along Red Rock Loop Road or Schnebly Hill Road for additional views without extra hiking.

This plan balances Sedona’s iconic scenery with kid-friendly trails, giving you both adventure and safety for a memorable day.
