Aerosols

Hi

I'm travelling to China later this year and have been reading about not taking aerosols on train journeys, is this still the case?

Will I need insect repellent? I'm visiting Shanghai, Beijing, Xi'an, Yangtze and Chengdu.

thanks

Mandy

Hi Mandy,

Regarding aerosols on trains in China, the rules have generally stayed strict for safety reasons, particularly on high-speed trains (Gao Tie and Dong Che). Aerosols are considered pressurized containers, which are restricted due to fire hazards. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Aerosol sprays (like deodorant, hairspray, or shaving foam) are usually not allowed in checked baggage on high-speed trains, and carrying them in hand luggage is often prohibited or limited in size.
  • If you must bring aerosols, opt for small travel-sized versions under 100 ml per container and check with the train station beforehand.
  • Alternatively, use solid or cream alternatives for deodorant, sunscreen, or insect repellent, which are widely available in China.

As for insect repellent, it can be useful depending on your destinations and the season:

  • Shanghai, Beijing, and Xi’an are urban areas, so mosquitoes are generally not a big issue, though in parks and near water you may encounter some.
  • Chengdu and Yangtze River areas may have more mosquitoes, especially near rivers, lakes, or in warmer months (May–September). A mild insect repellent can be handy.
  • Consider using repellent wipes or lotions rather than aerosols if you plan to use them on train journeys.

Summary:

  • Avoid bringing standard aerosols on trains; travel-sized non-aerosol alternatives are safer.
  • Carry insect repellent in lotion or wipe form, especially for river and countryside areas.
  • Urban sightseeing in Shanghai, Beijing, or Xi’an rarely requires insect repellent, but it’s good for parks or riverside walks.

Overall, planning ahead and using non-aerosol products will help you comply with train regulations and stay comfortable during your travels.
