What to do pre airport?
We’ve got a late (9pm) flight out of Phoenix on Saturday and understand it’s better to head down from Sedona a bit earlier in case of any road delays. We were thinking of going to the Desert Botanical Garden but now see it is shut from noon that day. Any suggestions for how to pass the time (me/my husband/14 year old son)? Happy with short easy ish walks/ anything basketball related for my son/ anywhere nice to have a wander round (though preferably with a bit of shade). Are there any water parks nearby?
Since you have a late flight out of Phoenix and the Desert Botanical Garden closes at noon that day, there are still several options to enjoy a few hours before heading to the airport. Given the hot May weather and your interest in short walks, shade, and something fun for your 14-year-old, here are some suggestions:
1. Short, easy walks and outdoor options with shade:
- Papago Park and Hole-in-the-Rock: A very short, easy walk up to the Hole-in-the-Rock formation gives panoramic views of the city. There is some shade near parking areas and desert vegetation to enjoy a short stroll.
- Tempe Town Lake / Kiwanis Park: Offers shaded walking paths along the lake and space for your son to play basketball at the nearby courts. The park is cooler than open desert areas and can be relaxing before the drive.
- Scottsdale Waterfront / Old Town Scottsdale: Plenty of shade under trees and covered walkways, galleries, and shops to browse. It’s an easy place for a gentle wander and grabbing a snack or coffee.
2. Basketball or sports-related activities:
- Check if any public basketball courts are open in Scottsdale or Tempe parks—many have shaded picnic areas nearby for parents to relax while kids shoot hoops.
- Some sports complexes near central Phoenix or Tempe may offer drop-in basketball sessions; a quick search or call can confirm availability.
3. Water or splash parks nearby:
- Big Surf Waterpark (Tempe): An older water park with wave pools and slides, can be a fun break from sightseeing. Check opening hours as some sections may close mid-day.
- City splash pads: Many parks in Phoenix and Scottsdale have small splash pads suitable for cooling off. These are free and usually shaded by nearby trees.
4. Other indoor or cooler options if you want to avoid the heat:
- Arizona Science Center (Downtown Phoenix): Interactive exhibits for all ages, including activities your son might enjoy, and indoor climate control.
- Musical Instrument Museum: Very cool exhibits and shaded walking paths outside; interesting for all ages.
- Shopping centers with indoor walkways: Scottsdale Fashion Square or Biltmore area malls offer air-conditioned areas for wandering and grabbing a meal or snack.
Tip: Plan to leave Sedona early enough to arrive in Phoenix by early afternoon, giving you a comfortable window to enjoy one or two of the above options, have lunch, and head to the airport without stress.
Overall, Papago Park and Old Town Scottsdale are probably the best mix of outdoor wandering, shade, and something light to do before your evening flight.
