Griffiths observatory for sunset
Hi we are thinking of going to the observatory to watch the sunset. We will have a car and it will be mid week. I have read it gets very congested and busy. It will be the second week in June when we would be going. Sunset is around 8pm.
How soon would we need to get there and is parking very difficult? Thanks for your advise
Griffith Observatory is one of the most popular spots in Los Angeles for sunset views, and even mid-week in June it can get quite busy. Since sunset will be around 8:00 PM during the second week of June, planning your arrival time is important to ensure a good experience and parking availability.
Here are some points to consider:
- Parking at Griffith Observatory is limited and fills up quickly, even on weekdays. The on-site parking lots tend to start filling in late afternoon, especially from 6:00 PM onward during the summer.
- For sunset views, it’s recommended to arrive at least 60-90 minutes before sunset, so around 6:30–7:00 PM. This gives you enough time to find parking and walk around for a good vantage point.
- If you can’t find on-site parking, there are several street parking options along the roads leading up to the Observatory, but these can require a short uphill walk. The closer you get, the better, as traffic and pedestrian congestion increases closer to sunset.
- Traffic can be slow on the roads leading up to Griffith Park, particularly along Vermont Canyon or Western Canyon Drives. Give yourself extra time to account for this.
Alternative options to reduce stress:
- Arrive earlier in the afternoon and explore the Observatory exhibits before sunset, then secure parking and enjoy the view.
- Consider using rideshare services like Uber or Lyft to avoid parking entirely. Drop-off and pick-up zones are available near the main entrance.
- If parking is full, the nearby Greek Theatre area sometimes has overflow parking with a short walk or shuttle to the Observatory.
In summary, for a mid-week June sunset visit, aim to arrive around 6:30–7:00 PM, be prepared for limited parking, and consider alternative parking or rideshare options to avoid stress. Early arrival also gives you time to enjoy the Observatory exhibits and take in views of LA as the sun sets.
