Experience Using Dodger Stadium Express
Greetings!
I'm considering taking the Pacific Surfliner up from San Diego to Union Station, and then the Dodger Stadium Express from Union Station to the stadium.
I am curious to hear first-hand experiences on using the shuttle before and after the game. Specifically:
- Was it crowded? Did you have to wait long at Union Station to get aboard? If so, how long? (Just trying to estimate how early to get there to be in my seats at the first pitch.)
- It looks like it's about a 10-minute ride between the station and stadium. Is that accurate?
- The shuttle is advertised to run for only 45 minutes after the end of the game. Is it difficult getting back on the shuttle for the return trip to Union Station? Does the shuttle start running before the end of the game in case you want to skip out a little early?
Thanks in advance!
Using the Dodger Stadium Express is a convenient way to get to and from Dodger Stadium, especially if you’re coming from San Diego via the Pacific Surfliner. Here’s what you can expect based on first-hand reports and typical experiences:
Before the game:
- The shuttle typically boards at Union Station near the Patsaouras Transit Plaza. During popular games, especially weekend or evening matches, it can get crowded, so arriving at least 45–60 minutes before the game is recommended to secure a seat and not feel rushed.
- The wait time to board can vary. If you’re early, it’s usually smooth, but near game time there may be lines of 10–20 minutes.
- The ride from Union Station to the stadium is about 10–15 minutes, depending on traffic and loading times, so the advertised 10 minutes is a reasonable estimate.
After the game:
- The shuttle runs for about 45 minutes post-game. Many people report that the first few shuttles after the game can be crowded, especially if the game ends at peak hours. Arriving early in that window helps avoid longer waits.
- It is generally manageable to get back on the shuttle, but if you want to be sure to catch a seat, plan to leave the stadium promptly rather than lingering too long.
- The shuttle does not usually run before the end of the game for early departures, as most people expect to use it immediately after the game finishes. Leaving the game early may require walking to a nearby transit stop or arranging alternate transportation.
Tips for a smooth experience:
- Arrive at Union Station early to get a good spot on the shuttle, especially if you have specific seating preferences or want to avoid standing.
- Check the game day shuttle schedule in advance, as timing can vary with special events, day-of-week, or delays.
- Keep in mind the shuttle route is direct and convenient, but if the stadium is hosting a high-profile game, allow extra time for boarding both ways.
- If you want to skip the post-game rush, consider waiting for the second or third shuttle, but be aware that the last shuttle leaves roughly 45 minutes after the game ends.
Overall, the Dodger Stadium Express is a reliable, quick, and stress-free option, especially compared to driving and parking near the stadium, but timing your arrival and departure carefully will maximize comfort and convenience.
