Looking for excursions during our AUG 2025 Cruise

We are going on a Holland Cruise this August stopping in Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. The cruise line offers many excursions but I also like to see what we can do on our own. Any ideas would be appreciated as well as names of any reputable private excursion companies at these stops. We are 4 middle age , fairly active adults who want to get the most out of our trip.

Thank you.

Alaska cruises are fantastic for active travelers, and Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway each offer unique excursions, both through the cruise line and independently. Since you are fairly active and want to maximize your time, here are detailed suggestions for each port:

Ketchikan:

  • Misty Fjords National Monument Flightseeing: A small plane or helicopter tour is a stunning way to see fjords, cliffs, waterfalls, and wildlife. This is a must for first-timers who want dramatic scenery.
  • Kayaking or Paddleboarding: Many local outfitters offer guided paddles through calm waters near the harbor and Tongass National Forest. Good for active visitors and provides a close-up view of wildlife.
  • Historic Creek Street Walking Tour: Explore Ketchikan’s history and colorful past, including salmon canneries and local culture, at a relaxed pace.
  • Private Companies: Some reputable operators include Misty Fjords Air and Sea Adventures, Alaska Shore Tours, and Ketchikan Kayak Co.

Juneau:

  • Mendenhall Glacier Hike: Short hikes or longer guided hikes to Mendenhall Glacier are very popular and rewarding. For more adventure, try a glacier trekking tour with crampons and guides.
  • Whale Watching Tours: Excursions in Auke Bay or Stephens Passage offer opportunities to see humpbacks and orcas, often combined with sea lions and puffins.
  • Kayaking in the Inside Passage: Active kayaking tours allow paddling around glaciers, waterfalls, and secluded coves.
  • Private Companies: Consider Juneau Kayak & Whale Watch, Harris Glacier Guides, or Alaska Shore Tours for reliable independent options.

Skagway:

  • White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad: Even if your group is active, the scenic train ride is iconic and gives historical context to the Klondike Gold Rush.
  • Hiking and Biking: The area offers trails like Lower Reid Falls or the Chilkoot Trail segments. Guided hiking tours are also available if you want historical stories along the way.
  • Dog Sledding on the Glacier: Many tours offer summer glacier sled rides using wheeled rigs; an adventurous option unique to the region.
  • Private Companies: Skagway Adventures, Klondike Gold Rush Excursions, and Alaska Shore Excursions are well-reviewed for active travelers.

Tips for Independent Excursions:

  • Book in advance, especially for August, as it is peak season.
  • Check travel times from the cruise terminal to excursion sites; local shuttles or taxis can be limited.
  • Bring layers, waterproof gear, and sturdy shoes. Weather can change quickly.
  • Compare prices and duration versus cruise line excursions. Independent tours can be more flexible and often less crowded.

Overall, if your group enjoys outdoor activities, combining moderate hikes, water adventures, and sightseeing will provide a full Alaskan experience. Each port offers both active and scenic excursions, so you can mix intense and relaxed experiences across your stops.
