Which area to stay in, as first timers

Hi! We’re a family of 4- mid 50s and our kids being 18-20. We have 4 days in San Francisco, our first trip to this city. We’ll be using public transport.

Would like to sightsee and also explore the area around UCSF Mission Bay( one of the kids will be studying here soon). Safety and proximity to cafés/ restaurant are both important too.

Am I asking for the moon? What area should I look to stay in? (open to both- a hotel or an airbnb option).

For a first-time visit to San Francisco, especially as a family with older teens, choosing the right neighborhood is important for safety, convenience, and access to public transportation.

Since you want proximity to UCSF Mission Bay and easy sightseeing, consider staying in one of the following areas:

  • South of Market (SoMa): Close to UCSF Mission Bay, this area has modern hotels and some Airbnb options. It’s a tech and museum hub with cafes, restaurants, and easy access to public transit (Muni and BART). The area can be quiet during the evening in some parts, but select a spot near main streets for safety.
  • Mission Bay / Mission District: Mission Bay is very close to UCSF, with new hotels and apartment-style accommodations. The adjacent Mission District offers vibrant murals, restaurants, and cafes, making it lively but still walkable. It’s an artsy area with good access to buses and the T-line streetcar.
  • Embarcadero / Ferry Building area: This is scenic and safe, with waterfront walks, restaurants, and ferry access. While it’s a bit farther from Mission Bay, public transport can connect you quickly. Ideal if you prefer a quieter, picturesque area while sightseeing.
  • Union Square / Downtown: A classic choice for first-timers. Plenty of hotels, restaurants, and shopping, plus central access to cable cars, Muni, and BART. From here, you can reach Mission Bay with a short bus or rideshare.

Tips for your stay:

  • Prioritize hotels or Airbnb accommodations with good reviews for safety, especially regarding street noise and nighttime walking.
  • If public transport is your main mode, check proximity to Muni stops or BART stations.
  • Consider a short walk or rideshare to Mission Bay rather than staying directly on campus if you want a livelier neighborhood with dining options.

Summary: For a balance of safety, dining options, and transit access, SoMa or Mission Bay are ideal. Union Square or the Embarcadero can work well if you prefer a more central or scenic location for sightseeing. Make sure to pick lodging near main streets and public transit to simplify moving around the city.
