Is the Union Square area a good place to stay?

I’m arriving in Los Angeles on Amtrak and am wondering if the Union Station area is a good, safe place to stay?

I was looking at two hotels that look to be within walking distance: the Miyako and the Biltmore.

The Union Station area in Los Angeles is generally considered convenient for travelers arriving by train, as it is close to major transit options including Metro lines, buses, and taxis. Staying nearby offers easy access to downtown attractions such as Olvera Street, the Arts District, and the Broad Museum.

In terms of safety, the area is a mixed bag. Downtown LA has some neighborhoods with higher rates of petty crime and panhandling, and the immediate surroundings of Union Station can be a bit rough after dark. However, both the Miyako Hotel and the Millennium Biltmore are well-established hotels with security measures and are located in areas that are frequently patrolled.

Pros of staying near Union Station:

  • Excellent transit connections to other parts of LA, including Hollywood, Santa Monica, and LAX via Metro or FlyAway bus.
  • Close to historic and cultural sites, including El Pueblo de Los Angeles and Chinatown.
  • Walking distance to several restaurants, cafes, and some nightlife.

Cons to be aware of:

  • Some streets around Union Station may feel less safe at night; it's best to stick to well-lit main roads.
  • Limited upscale shopping or scenic streetscapes compared to areas like Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, or West Hollywood.
  • Homeless encampments are visible in some parts of downtown, which may be concerning for some visitors.

Tips if you stay in this area:

  • Book a hotel with good reviews and security, like the Miyako or Biltmore, as you mentioned.
  • Avoid walking alone late at night in less busy streets.
  • Use rideshares or taxis for evening excursions outside the immediate downtown area.
  • Plan to explore downtown and nearby neighborhoods during daylight for safety and enjoyment.

Overall, the Union Station area is a practical choice for a short stay in Los Angeles, especially if your goal is transit convenience and access to downtown attractions. Just take normal city safety precautions.
