WHAT ABOUT DEATH VALLEYS AND OTHERS NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

For an 11-night U.S. trip with a focus on Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and San Francisco, your rough plan of 5 nights in LA, 4 in LV, and 2 in SF is workable, especially if you are looking for a mix of theme parks, city sightseeing, and some nearby day trips.

Los Angeles Stay & Budget Hotels:

For visiting Disneyland, Legoland, and potentially day trips to nearby coastal or cultural areas, staying in the Anaheim or Buena Park area is ideal. These locations are central to Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and within a 1.5–2 hour drive to Legoland. Budget hotels in these areas under $150/night are typically chain motels or smaller boutique options.

  • Buena Park/Fullerton – Close to Knott’s Berry Farm, budget-friendly motels.
  • Anaheim – Best for Disneyland access; many motels and budget hotels under $150, especially if booking early.
  • Consider using Airbnb or vacation rentals if traveling with a family; sometimes more cost-effective for multiple nights.

You could stay in a single location in Anaheim for all 5 nights to reduce packing/unpacking, with day trips to Legoland (Carlsbad ~1 hour), Santa Monica (~1 hour 15 min), or San Diego (~2 hours). For shorter day trips like Santa Monica or Venice Beach, you could manage in a single day.

Suggested Itinerary for 5 Days in LA Area:

  • Day 1: Disneyland or California Adventure (full day, Anaheim).
  • Day 2: Disneyland or California Adventure if you want to split parks; evening at Downtown Disney for dinner/shopping.
  • Day 3: Legoland day trip (drive to Carlsbad ~1–1.5 hrs each way). Focus on rides and aquarium.
  • Day 4: Santa Monica/Pacific Coast Highway day trip: beach, pier, shops, walk along Venice Boardwalk.
  • Day 5: Optional day: Knott’s Berry Farm, Hollywood sightseeing, or Griffith Observatory hike. Adjust based on energy levels.

Other Nearby Overnight Options:

  • San Diego – If you want to spend a night, it’s feasible to drive ~2 hours south. Good for beaches, La Jolla, or SeaWorld.
  • Santa Barbara – About 1.5–2 hours north. You could do a day trip or stay overnight to break up driving along the coast.

Las Vegas & San Francisco:

4 nights in Las Vegas allows time to explore the Strip, do shows, and maybe a day trip to Hoover Dam or Red Rock Canyon. 2 nights in San Francisco is tight but doable for main highlights: Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz, and a neighborhood walk (Chinatown, Mission, or North Beach).

Other Attractions & Considerations:

  • Death Valley – Not recommended if traveling with a child and limited days; very hot in September. Best visited with more time and prepared for desert conditions.
  • Other day trips from LA include Malibu, Joshua Tree (~2.5 hours each way), or Palm Springs (~2 hours). Prioritize based on interest.

In summary, your plan is reasonable. Staying in Anaheim for all 5 nights simplifies logistics. For day trips like San Diego, Santa Monica, or Legoland, you can return each evening. Budget hotels and motels under $150 are available, and using a combination of online booking sites or Airbnb may give better value. Avoid cramming too many long drives; focus on your top interests and outdoor attractions that are manageable with your 10-year-old.
