Car Break-in's!

Hi, we are just finalising our trip! We are driving from LA to Vegas and had planned to stop at Peggy Sue's but have since heard of car break-ins there? Not sure how true this is? Would people recommend somewhere else safer to stop on route for food/break? Thanks!

Hi there! It’s great that you're finalizing your trip to Vegas. Peggy Sue's is a popular stop on the way from LA to Vegas, known for its retro diner vibe and food, but it’s true that there have been occasional reports of car break-ins in the area. While it’s not a frequent problem, it's always wise to take precautions when stopping at rest areas or touristy spots along highways. If you're concerned about this, it might be a good idea to consider alternative stops or take extra security measures, such as locking your car and keeping valuables out of sight.

Here are a few safer options along the route where you can stop for food and a break:

  • Barstow (In-N-Out Burger) – A popular and well-lit stop, Barstow is a bustling town with several food options, including a reliable In-N-Out Burger right off the highway. It's generally safe and well-trafficked by travelers.
  • Victorville (The Olive Garden or Denny's) – Another good option, Victorville has larger parking lots, and you can find restaurants like Olive Garden and Denny's. The area is a bit more urbanized, making it a safer bet for stopping for food.
  • Calico Ghost Town – For a more unique stop, consider detouring to Calico Ghost Town. It’s a historic site with a cool atmosphere, and the parking area feels more secure with lots of people around. It's a bit off the main highway, but worth the detour if you enjoy quirky attractions.

In general, sticking to busier, more populated areas for food stops can help minimize the risk of car break-ins. Be mindful of your surroundings and always lock your vehicle, especially if you're leaving valuables inside.

Safe travels on your road trip, and enjoy your time in Vegas!
