What we can do in quick layover at LAX ?
Hi.
Our Alaska flight will reach at 12:15 pm today from Liberia. And then will leave at 6:34 pm for Seattle. We are non-citizen, so may take some time in immigration. In this short one, do we have option to go out of airport and visit some places ?
We will have luggage, but I guess I can give it to Alaska counter for Seattle before leaving, and will carry only hand baggage.
Thanks.
With a layover of roughly 6 hours at LAX, it’s technically possible to leave the airport, but there are some important considerations. As non-U.S. citizens, you’ll need to go through U.S. immigration and customs, which can take 30–90 minutes depending on the queues. After that, you’ll need to pick up your checked luggage and recheck it for your Alaska Airlines flight to Seattle, which will add additional time.
Given these factors, a safe estimate for leaving the airport and returning is about 3–4 hours max, including travel time. LAX is in Los Angeles traffic, so any trip into the city can be unpredictable. Here are a few options:
- Stay near the airport: The easiest and safest option is to explore nearby areas without straying far:
- El Segundo – a short 10–15 minute drive, with shops, cafes, and local parks.
- Dockweiler Beach – a 10–15 minute drive from the terminals for a quick ocean visit and fresh air.
- Westchester or Playa Vista – small neighborhoods near LAX with casual dining options.
- Quick city excursion (with caution): If you’re determined to get a taste of LA, you could consider Venice Beach or Santa Monica, but keep in mind traffic can be heavy:
- Santa Monica Pier – roughly 25–35 minutes each way without traffic. Walking along the beach or grabbing a quick bite can fit into your schedule if you start early.
- Venice Boardwalk – similar travel time, with street performers and shops to explore briefly.
- Airport-adjacent amenities: If you prefer less risk, LAX and surrounding hotels offer comfortable lounges, restaurants, and shops to pass the time safely without leaving the airport:
- In-terminal dining options in the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT).
- Airport lounges (Alaska Lounge, American Express Centurion if eligible, or Priority Pass options).
Additional tips:
- Check with Alaska Airlines if you can check your luggage through to Seattle immediately after immigration; some airlines allow this which saves time.
- Allow at least 90–120 minutes to get back through security for your connecting flight.
- Use a rideshare app for speed; LAX shuttle options can be slower.
In summary, a very short trip outside the airport is possible if you stay close to LAX. For more iconic LA sights, traffic makes it risky, and it may be safer and more relaxing to enjoy the airport amenities and plan to visit LA on a longer trip.
