Safe to take overnight Flixbus from SJ to LA?

Hi

My family is planning to travel from San Jose to LA with an overnight bus (Flixbus). Is it safe to be on an overnight bus? Can we sleep on the bus?

We're travelling with two kids so just don't want to have any bad/uncomfortable experience for the kids?

Thanks

Traveling overnight on FlixBus from San Jose to Los Angeles can be a convenient option, especially if you want to save on a night of hotel accommodation. In general, FlixBus is considered safe, but there are a few things to consider when traveling with kids overnight.

Safety and Comfort Tips:

  • FlixBus drivers are trained professionally and the buses are equipped with seatbelts. Most buses also have cameras for safety monitoring.
  • While the buses are generally safe, keep personal items close to you, and use a small lock for luggage if possible.
  • Seats on overnight buses recline but are not fully flat, so sleeping can be a bit uncomfortable, especially for children.
  • Bring a travel pillow, blanket, and perhaps a small stuffed animal or comfort item for the kids.
  • Consider packing snacks, water, and some entertainment (books, tablets, headphones) to keep children occupied.

Practical Considerations:

  • Overnight buses tend to be quieter than daytime trips, but some light movement or stops at rest areas may disturb sleep.
  • Check the bus schedule for arrival times to ensure it’s convenient for your family’s plans in LA.
  • Seats are assigned based on booking, so try to choose seats together and near the front for more stability and easy access to the restroom.
  • Bring a small flashlight or use your phone light for any late-night trips to the restroom.

Overall, an overnight FlixBus is reasonably safe for families, but sleeping comfort may vary. If you and your children are comfortable with a slightly less-than-flat seat and are prepared with pillows and entertainment, it can be a cost-effective and safe option.
