Andaz Maui vs Hyatt Regency Maui - Which has better beach?

Trying to decide between the Andaz Maui and Hyatt Regency Maui. Traveling with 2 boys ages 10 and 12. They generally spend a lot of time on the beach and like snorkeling and boogie boarding. Which resort has the better beach for these activities? Can you shore fish from anywhere near either resort?

Both the Andaz Maui at Wailea and the Hyatt Regency Maui in Kaanapali are excellent resorts, but they cater to slightly different beach experiences, which is important when traveling with kids who love snorkeling and boogie boarding.

The Andaz Maui sits on Mokapu Beach, which is a wide, gently sloping sandy beach with calm waters in most areas. It’s great for kids as the sand stretches far into the water, making it safe for wading, swimming, and boogie boarding. Snorkeling directly off the beach is possible, especially near the rockier outcrops at the ends of the beach, though fish may be less abundant than in more protected snorkeling coves.

The Hyatt Regency Maui is located on Ka’anapali Beach, which is more bustling and has a long stretch of white sand perfect for swimming and boogie boarding. Snorkeling is possible near Black Rock at the north end of the beach, which is excellent for seeing colorful fish and turtles. Black Rock is also a spot where people sometimes shore fish, though it can be crowded with swimmers and divers.

  • Andaz Maui – Mokapu Beach; quiet and family-friendly; gentle waves; safe for young kids; snorkeling near rocky areas; less crowded.
  • Hyatt Regency Maui – Ka’anapali Beach; excellent snorkeling at Black Rock; more active beach; good for boogie boarding; shore fishing possible near rocks but limited.

Other considerations:

  • If your boys enjoy exploring and seeing marine life, Hyatt Regency’s proximity to Black Rock gives a slight edge for snorkeling.
  • If you prefer a quieter, more relaxed beach day with plenty of sand for playing, Andaz Maui offers a more laid-back experience.
  • Both resorts have pool options and family-friendly amenities, but the beach experience will likely define the trip for your kids.

Overall, for snorkeling and marine life, Hyatt Regency wins slightly due to Black Rock. For general beach fun, space, and safety for kids, Andaz Maui is excellent. Shore fishing is more feasible near rocky areas at both resorts, but it’s limited and better done early morning or late afternoon to avoid swimmers.
