Free ferry ride HK-Macau for foreign visitors?

I have read about the fact that between may 1 and dec 31 foreign visitors (other than chinese etc) can benefit for a free ferry HK to Macau. I have read the conditions and it says that you must provide the boarding pass or "transportation document/receipt". So if i come to HK by train from China, this still applies, i undersatnd well, and it would be enough to show the train booking.

Also it says that the seats are limited, so i assume one should book in advance.

Thank you.

The free ferry promotion from Hong Kong to Macau for foreign visitors is indeed available between May 1 and December 31. It is designed for non-Chinese passport holders and requires proof of recent arrival in Hong Kong.

Regarding your situation:

  • Arriving in Hong Kong by train from Mainland China: This still qualifies for the promotion, provided you can show a valid transportation document. A train ticket/booking showing your recent arrival in Hong Kong should generally suffice as proof.
  • Boarding pass/receipt: The promotion usually requires showing a boarding pass from your inbound international flight or an equivalent transportation document. In your case, the train ticket acts as that document.
  • Booking in advance: Yes, free ferry seats are limited. It is strongly recommended to book your ferry slot in advance to secure a seat, especially on weekends or holidays.

Additional tips:

  • Check the ferry operator’s official website for exact booking procedures and any documentation requirements. Some operators may have forms to fill or verification steps at the terminal.
  • Have a valid passport ready; the ferry staff will check it along with your transportation proof.
  • Arrive early at the ferry terminal, as the promotion may attract a large number of visitors and the limited free seats could be claimed quickly.

In summary, arriving by train from Mainland China should qualify you for the free ferry promotion, as long as you provide the train ticket as proof and book your seat in advance.
