Three days in Hong Kong and payment..

Hi folks

I am planning 3 days in Hong Kong in June...

I will use Octopus-App only from my iPhone for all payments. Is it OK?

I will pay hotel my my credit-card and use Octopus for Airport Express, Ferries, bus, Peak Tram, MTR, dinning etc. Is it OK?'

Then I dont need cash as USD or exchange to HKD, right?

Using the Octopus App on your iPhone for all daily payments during a 3-day trip in Hong Kong is generally very convenient and widely accepted. The Octopus system is integrated with public transport, many retail stores, restaurants, and attractions, making it a practical cashless solution for short-term visitors.

Here are the details regarding usage and considerations:

  • Transportation: Octopus is accepted on the MTR, buses, trams, ferries (including Star Ferry), Airport Express (tapping on/off at stations), and the Peak Tram. Using the app is equivalent to tapping a physical Octopus card and works smoothly for single or multiple rides.
  • Dining and Retail: Many restaurants, cafes, convenience stores, supermarkets, and retail shops accept Octopus payments. You can also use it for small transactions like street food or snack purchases.
  • Hotels: Major hotels generally do not accept Octopus as a payment method for room charges, so your plan to use a credit card for hotel bills is appropriate. Octopus is mostly for everyday expenses and transport.

Practical tips:

  • Ensure your Octopus App is set up with sufficient balance or linked to a credit card for auto top-up if needed. Check your phone and the app's settings before travel.
  • While most places accept Octopus, very few small or remote establishments might still prefer cash, so carrying a small amount of Hong Kong Dollars (HKD) as backup can be helpful.
  • Using Octopus means you generally do not need to carry USD or exchange cash to HKD in advance. Any remaining balance can typically be refunded at designated Octopus Customer Service Centers before departure.
  • For convenience, top up the Octopus in advance, either through your app or at the airport convenience stores upon arrival.

In summary, using the Octopus App for transport, dining, and daily purchases in Hong Kong is highly practical, and you can avoid carrying large amounts of cash. For hotel payments, continue using your credit card. Carrying a small amount of HKD is optional as a backup, but for most urban areas, Octopus will suffice for all everyday transactions.
