Parking on Coronado Island

Hi,

I arrive early in the morning and want to drive to Coranado after I pick up rental car. Are there some spots with free parking? The other option is dropping my rental off at the hotel downtown and taking the ferry.

Coronado Island is a beautiful destination and parking can be tricky, especially in the mornings and on weekends. Here’s a detailed overview of your options and what to expect:

Free parking on Coronado:

  • There are limited street parking spots along Orange Avenue, the main street, but these are generally metered and not free.
  • Some residential streets further from the beach and downtown area may allow free parking, but availability is unpredictable and time limits may apply. Be mindful of signs and restrictions.
  • Near the Coronado Ferry Landing, there is usually some metered parking and short-term free loading/unloading areas, but these fill up quickly, especially in the morning.

Paid parking options:

  • Ferry Landing Parking Lots: There are public parking lots at the Ferry Landing with hourly and daily rates. These are convenient for walking to shops, restaurants, and the waterfront.
  • Hotel parking: If staying at a hotel, they typically offer parking for guests, which is convenient but comes at a cost.
  • Beach parking lots: Coronado Central Beach and Silver Strand State Beach have parking lots; daily rates apply, and they are within walking distance of the beach.

Alternative option – Ferry from Downtown San Diego:

  • Dropping the car downtown and taking the Coronado Ferry can be an easy and scenic alternative, especially if you want to avoid parking stress. The ferry runs frequently from Broadway Pier, and the ride offers great views of the San Diego skyline.
  • Once on Coronado, you can walk or rent a bike to get around, as the main attractions, shops, and restaurants are within easy distance from the ferry landing.
  • This option also eliminates concerns about early morning traffic and parking availability on the island.

Recommendation:

If your schedule is tight and you prefer stress-free logistics, taking the ferry is a convenient choice. If you prefer driving and having your car for flexibility, arrive very early and plan to use a paid lot for guaranteed parking.
