Hotel recommendations

Hi! Vacation in a few weeks, family of 4 with 2 teens, trying to figure out where to stay, clean, good location walkable to beach or town preferred, planning time to see Monterey, Carmel, and Santa Cruz, will be there for a few days. Looking at Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton Inn, or springhill suites by the dunes as possible options, open to non chain suggestions too, but want to stay in $350 ish range a night .

For a family of four visiting Monterey, Carmel, and Santa Cruz, staying in a location that is clean, safe, and walkable to the waterfront or downtown will make your trip much more convenient and enjoyable. Monterey is a great base for exploring both Carmel and Santa Cruz as it is centrally located along the coast.

Chain hotel options within your budget (~$350/night):

  • Hilton Garden Inn Monterey: Located near Old Fisherman’s Wharf and Cannery Row, walking distance to the beach and restaurants. Rooms are modern and family-friendly.
  • Hampton Inn & Suites Monterey: Conveniently located near Cannery Row and the waterfront, includes breakfast, family suites, and easy access to downtown Monterey.
  • SpringHill Suites by Marriott Monterey Dunes: Slightly further from downtown Monterey but close to the beach and golf area. Offers larger rooms and good amenities for families.

Non-chain/higher-rated boutique options in Monterey and Carmel:

  • Spindrift Inn (Monterey): Charming boutique hotel right on Cannery Row with ocean views, very walkable to shops and restaurants.
  • Monterey Bay Inn: Overlooks the bay, close to downtown and Fisherman’s Wharf. Quiet and family-friendly.
  • Carmel Mission Inn: Located in Carmel, convenient for exploring Carmel-by-the-Sea and nearby beaches. Offers family suites and pool.
  • Best Western Carmel’s Town House Lodge: Affordable, centrally located in Carmel, clean and comfortable for families.

Tips for your stay:

  • Book early to secure the best rates, especially if visiting in peak season.
  • Consider proximity to parking if you plan to drive to Carmel or Santa Cruz, as some downtown areas have limited parking.
  • Staying in Monterey gives you the flexibility to drive along the scenic 17-Mile Drive, visit Pebble Beach, and take short trips to Carmel and Santa Cruz without switching hotels.

Overall, if your priority is walkability to attractions and beaches, Hilton Garden Inn or Hampton Inn near Cannery Row are strong choices. For a more boutique and scenic experience, Spindrift Inn or Monterey Bay Inn are excellent alternatives within a similar budget, especially if you enjoy ocean views and a charming, local feel.
