Uber inside curfew zone after 8pm?
Hello - We have reservations at the Sheraton Grand in downtown this weekend, which is inside the curfew zone. We have tickets to a Dodgers game on Saturday night and we’re hoping to take an Uber back to the hotel from the stadium. Does anyone know if this will be a problem with the curfew? Are restaurants around the hotel open?Should I change hotels?
Good question. As of now, there is no 8 PM curfew in downtown Los Angeles that should block Uber rides to or from your hotel — the curfew situation has changed recently. Here’s a detailed breakdown:
Current Curfew Status
- Originally, a curfew had been imposed in parts of downtown L.A. from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
- As of mid-June 2025, the curfew was reduced: now it runs from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM in the restricted downtown area.
- On June 17, 2025, the mayor officially lifted the curfew for downtown L.A. altogether.
What the Curfew Means for Uber / Rideshares
- The city’s curfew guidance explicitly states that “rideshare and food delivery service companies can operate during curfew hours.”
- Drivers may need to show proof (via their app) of a valid pickup or drop-off.
- If the curfew were active, hotel guests are an exempt category — having a reservation confirms you’re allowed to be in the zone after curfew.
- Freeway traffic appears to be largely unaffected: people on the 110, 10, or 5 freeways report being able to drive through the curfew area.
Restaurants and Nightlife Around Sheraton Grand / Downtown
- Because the curfew has been lifted, many downtown businesses (restaurants, bars, etc.) are likely operating on more normal hours again — though hours may vary by establishment.
- During the curfew period (before it was lifted), some businesses may have closed earlier, or patrons were required to leave by curfew.
Risks & Considerations for Your Stay
- Even with the curfew lifted, downtown L.A. has had recent protests and law-enforcement presence, so some disruption is possible depending on timing.
- Uber or Lyft drivers may still exercise caution in certain areas — availability and willingness to pick up/drop off late at night might be more limited than during normal times.
- When using rideshares, it’s smart to have documentation on your phone (or printed) showing your hotel reservation in case there are any questions from law enforcement.
- If you’re concerned, you might want to consider staying at a nearby hotel outside the “former” curfew boundaries, or make a backup plan (like a taxi company, or knowing safe routes). However, many travelers in your situation report being able to get Ubers without major issues.
My Recommendation
- You do not necessarily need to change hotels just because of curfew fears — the curfew has been lifted, and rideshares are allowed.
- Still, be prepared: have your reservation confirmation, ride-share apps ready, and a backup transport plan.
