6 hours to spend in the Phoenix area, what should I do?

Hello, I am flying in to PHX from Grand Rapids, MI on Sunday, June 22nd for a work conference, so I will be by myself. My flight arrives at 9:30am local time. I don't really have to be to my hotel (Westin Kierland in Scottsdale) for the conference until 4pm at the earliest. I decided to rent a car for the day so I can do a little exploring. It is my first time in Phoenix (I did go to the Grand Canyon years ago while I was in Vegas). My first thought was to just drive up to Sedona, hitting the Red Rock Scenic Byway on the way, grab some lunch, and then just head back.

My other thought was head East and see a few of the things along the Apache Trail, like Canyon Lake, etc.

Or I could just stay closer to the Scottsdale area, check out TPC Scottsdale, things like that.

What would you recommend for such a quick day?

With only about 6 hours to explore Phoenix and surrounding areas before checking into your hotel in Scottsdale, it’s best to focus on activities that are relatively close and won’t involve overly long drives, given the summer heat and the time constraints. Both Sedona and the Apache Trail are beautiful, but Sedona is roughly a 2-hour drive each way from Phoenix, which will take up most of your day just driving. The Apache Trail is closer, but some of the scenic spots involve winding roads that can be slow-going. If you want to maximize sightseeing without feeling rushed, staying closer to Scottsdale may be the most practical choice.

Here are some tailored options for your 6-hour window:

  • Explore Scottsdale and nearby highlights: Scottsdale has great art galleries, the Old Town area, and the Scottsdale Waterfront. You could grab brunch at a local café and enjoy some sightseeing on foot. This keeps you relaxed and on schedule.
  • Desert Botanical Garden: Located in Phoenix, about 25 minutes from Scottsdale. The garden showcases desert flora and has easy walking trails. It’s a perfect half-day activity that won’t be stressful and offers great photography opportunities.
  • Papago Park & Hole-in-the-Rock: Adjacent to the Desert Botanical Garden. A short, easy walk to a rock formation with panoramic city views. Ideal for stretching your legs and getting a desert experience without a long hike.
  • Short drive along the Apache Trail: If you prefer a scenic drive, head east on the Apache Trail. You can see Canyon Lake, Tortilla Flat, and enjoy the desert landscapes. Plan for 2-3 hours round trip if you only want to visit one or two spots.
  • TPC Scottsdale or golf-related attractions: Even if you’re not playing, the area has golf-themed shops and scenic spots around the courses, and you can enjoy a quick lunch nearby.

Recommended itinerary for your window:

  • 9:30am – Pick up rental car and head to Desert Botanical Garden (25–30 min drive).
  • 10:15am–12:15pm – Explore the garden and nearby Papago Park/Hole-in-the-Rock.
  • 12:30–1:30pm – Lunch in Old Town Scottsdale at a casual spot with outdoor seating.
  • 1:30–3:30pm – Optional scenic drive on Apache Trail or explore Scottsdale art galleries and shops.
  • 3:30–4:00pm – Head to Westin Kierland to check in for your conference.

This plan balances sightseeing, short walking trails, and relaxing desert views without feeling rushed or exhausting, and it keeps you close enough to arrive at your hotel on time.
