Hotels with smoking permitted rooms

Hello, we are planning a trip and found out that some hotels allow smoking inside the rooms. While I won’t be smoking even if the room is a smoking permitted room, will the hotel or the room itself have a faint or lingering smell of smoke? We are eyeing some hotels that we like the location of but allows smoking in some or all of their rooms.

My son has mild allergic rhinitis.

Sometimes smoke smell triggers it and sometimes it doesn’t

Thanks

Hotels in Chengdu that allow smoking in some or all rooms often carry a residual smell of smoke, even if the room has been cleaned. The intensity of this smell depends on how frequently the room is used by smokers, how well the hotel ventilates and cleans the rooms, and the building’s overall smoking policies.

For guests with mild allergic rhinitis, even faint smoke odors can sometimes trigger symptoms. Here are some important considerations:

  • Smoking-permitted rooms usually cannot be fully deodorized; fabrics, carpets, curtains, and upholstery can retain smoke particles, leading to lingering odors.
  • Even if you do not smoke, staying in a smoking room or a hotel where smoking is common may expose you to residual smoke particles or third-hand smoke in hallways, elevators, or common areas.
  • Hotels that only designate certain floors as smoking floors may reduce the smell on non-smoking floors, but air circulation can still allow some smoke odor to travel.

Recommendations to minimize risk for your son:

  • Whenever possible, book a confirmed non-smoking room in a hotel that offers smoking restrictions or entirely smoke-free floors.
  • If you must choose a hotel that allows smoking in some rooms, contact the hotel directly to request a room that has never been used as a smoking room and is away from smoking areas or floors.
  • Consider using air purifiers or opening windows to improve ventilation if residual odors are noticeable.
  • Check recent guest reviews for mentions of smoke smell; this often gives a better sense of the current room conditions.

Summary:

Even if you do not smoke, staying in a hotel or room that allows smoking can carry a faint or lingering smoke smell, which may trigger mild allergic reactions. To minimize risk, prioritize confirmed non-smoking rooms, request freshly cleaned or never-smoked rooms, and avoid hotels where smoking is prevalent on multiple floors.
