December Chengdu

Hi all, I'm going to Chengdu/Chongqing on 18/12 - 28/12 . Would like to know it's very crowded during this time and how about the weather? thanks

Traveling to Chengdu and Chongqing between 18th and 28th December is generally outside of China’s major holiday periods, so crowds are moderate compared to peak times such as National Day (October) or Chinese New Year. However, since your trip overlaps with the Christmas period, some hotels and popular tourist sites may see slightly higher international visitor numbers.

Regarding weather in late December:

  • Chengdu: Expect cool and damp conditions. Average daytime temperatures range from 7°C to 12°C, and nights can drop to around 3–5°C. The city is known for its fog and drizzle during winter, so pack a warm waterproof jacket and layers.
  • Chongqing: Slightly warmer than Chengdu but still cool. Daytime temperatures average 8°C to 13°C, with nighttime temperatures around 5°C. Like Chengdu, it can be foggy and humid, so comfortable walking shoes and layers are recommended.

Other considerations for your December trip:

  • Tourist attractions like the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base in Chengdu can be visited without extremely long queues, though mornings are slightly busier.
  • Indoor activities such as tea houses, museums, and Sichuan opera performances are good options during colder or damp days.
  • Travel between Chengdu and Chongqing is convenient via high-speed train (about 2 hours), and trains are generally not overcrowded during this season.

In summary, late December offers cooler weather and moderate crowds, making it a comfortable time to explore both cities, provided you dress warmly and are prepared for damp conditions.
