Outlook and yahoo emails

Hello

Just wondering if I can access my outlook email and yahoo email when I am in Chengdu and other cities in China, when I am using the WIFi of the hotels

Thank you

Accessing email services like Outlook and Yahoo in China can be challenging due to the country's internet restrictions, often referred to as the "Great Firewall." Some services are partially or fully blocked, and hotel WiFi networks are subject to these restrictions.

Specifically:

  • Outlook/Hotmail: Access can be inconsistent. Sometimes you can log in via the web interface, but certain features like attachments or syncing may not work reliably. Outlook apps may require additional configuration or a VPN.
  • Yahoo Mail: Yahoo email is often blocked in China. Even if you can reach the login page, sending and receiving emails may fail. Mobile apps may not function without a VPN.

Options to reliably access your email while in Chengdu or other Chinese cities:

  • Use a VPN service before entering China. A VPN allows you to securely connect to servers outside China, bypassing restrictions. Make sure the VPN is reputable and compatible with your devices.
  • Consider email forwarding before travel: forward important emails to an account that is accessible in China, like Gmail (note: Gmail is also blocked, so you may need a VPN for that too).
  • Use email clients configured with IMAP/POP3 on your laptop or phone. Sometimes connecting via these protocols with proper server settings works even if web access is blocked, but this is hit or miss.
  • Check if your hotel offers a VPN or business center access, though this is uncommon.

In summary, without a VPN, accessing Outlook or Yahoo reliably in Chengdu and other Chinese cities is difficult. Planning ahead with VPNs or alternative email solutions is recommended to ensure uninterrupted email access.
