Halepuna Waikiki VS. Outrigger Reef Waikiki
I currently have reservations for an ocean view room in the Pacific tower at the Outrigger Reef at end of August. They can't tell me if the room will be overlooking the pool(preferred) or overlooking the park. I'm 60 y/o, solo traveler. Like the beach but probably won't be out all day, every day. I do like the pool and hot tubs. The Halepuna looks like a beautiful property. I can get a full-on ocean view room there for about $400 more. My understanding from other's reviews is that the service is outstanding since it's the sister property to the Halekulani resort. Not crazy about kids since I don't have any of my own. Would be perfect if it was on the beach, but then probably couldn't afford it...lol. I know, first world problems. Any thoughts or recommendations greatly appreciated. Mahalo.
Choosing between the Outrigger Reef Waikiki and Halepuna Waikiki depends largely on your priorities for your stay, especially as a solo traveler who prefers a quieter environment, enjoys pools and hot tubs, and values excellent service. Both properties have strong points, but the experience will be quite different.
Outrigger Reef Waikiki – Pacific Tower:
- Pros: Central location in Waikiki, direct beach access, and easy walking distance to shops, restaurants, and nightlife. The Pacific Tower rooms offer ocean views, though the exact view may vary between pool or park views. The beach is just steps away, which is convenient if you plan occasional beach visits.
- Cons: The Outrigger Reef can feel more family-oriented, with children and groups frequently around the pool and common areas. Service is good but may not feel as personalized as a boutique-style property. Pool and hot tub areas may be crowded at times.
- Additional considerations: If the view is important, you could request a pool-view room again prior to arrival, though it is never guaranteed.
Halepuna Waikiki:
- Pros: Boutique, adults-friendly atmosphere with a quieter, more luxurious feel. Full-on ocean view rooms are available, and the property has excellent service due to its connection with Halekulani, which is highly regarded. The pool and hot tubs are serene and less crowded than larger resorts. Ideal for solo travelers or couples who want a peaceful stay without the presence of many children.
- Cons: It is not directly on the main beach; you are a short walk to Waikiki Beach rather than immediate beach access. The $400 premium for an ocean view is notable, but it comes with a more tranquil and upscale experience.
- Additional considerations: The property’s boutique size and personalized service make it perfect for reading, lounging, or enjoying the view without the typical crowds of Waikiki hotels.
Summary Recommendations:
- If having direct beach access and being in the heart of Waikiki is your top priority, the Outrigger Reef is a solid choice, though expect more family activity and less personalized attention.
- If you value a quieter, more luxurious environment, attentive service, and a premium ocean view—while being willing to walk a short distance to the beach—Halepuna is worth the extra investment, especially for solo travelers who want to relax and enjoy the property without crowds of children.
Given your preferences for the pool, hot tubs, tranquility, and avoiding family crowds, Halepuna Waikiki is likely the better match for your stay, despite the higher cost. You’ll enjoy a more peaceful experience, great service, and stunning ocean views, while still being within walking distance of Waikiki’s attractions.
