First time Sedona with Family.
Hello. My wife and I are traveling to Sedona Mid-July with our 2 daughters (8-15). We love the out doors and have lots of ideas for driving to Parks etc. So much info on here! I have a few questions. We are planning on driving for 1 day, then driving home to the GC...Whats is my best bet...what shall we do ? We would like to do the same for Antelope Canyon...thoughts? shall i get a National Park pass? What should I o about passes for State/National Parks? Any advice on anything would be great. I have done lots of research but feeling a bit overwhelmed with options. Thank You!!
Visiting Sedona for the first time with your family can be an incredible experience, especially with children who enjoy the outdoors. Since you are planning a short stop with driving excursions and will continue on to the Grand Canyon, it’s best to prioritize the most iconic sights and manageable hikes for your timeframe.
Driving & Sightseeing in Sedona (1 day)
- Red Rock Scenic Byway (SR 179): This drive offers stunning views of Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, and Cathedral Rock. Stop for short walks or photo ops.
- Chapel of the Holy Cross: A quick stop with panoramic views and an easy, family-friendly visit.
- Airport Mesa Overlook: Best for sunset or early morning views over the red rocks.
- Bell Rock Pathway: A short, easy hike suitable for children with spectacular scenery.
- Optional Pink Jeep Tour: These tours are family-friendly and explore off-road areas with minimal hiking effort.
Visiting Antelope Canyon
- Book a guided tour in advance, preferably mid-morning for good lighting.
- Lower Antelope Canyon is easier for children and less strenuous than Upper Antelope Canyon.
- Combine the tour with a quick visit to Horseshoe Bend, which is a short hike with incredible views.
- Consider staying overnight in Page to allow for relaxed timing rather than driving immediately after the tour.
National and State Park Passes
- If you plan to visit multiple National Parks in Arizona (Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest, etc.), consider purchasing the America the Beautiful Annual Pass for $80. It covers entrance fees for the whole vehicle at all U.S. National Parks.
- For Arizona State Parks, you may need individual day passes; some parks accept annual passes for multiple visits. Check specific park websites for current fees.
- Having the National Park pass will streamline entry and reduce costs if you plan to visit more than one park.
Tips for a Smooth Trip
- Start early to avoid crowds, especially in Antelope Canyon and popular Sedona viewpoints.
- Bring plenty of water, snacks, and sun protection; July can be hot.
- Keep hikes short and manageable for your daughters while prioritizing the most scenic spots.
- Consider driving the loop through Red Rock Scenic Byway, stopping at a few key viewpoints, and fitting in a short hike.
- Reserve tours and park entries in advance to ensure availability, particularly for Antelope Canyon.
By focusing on key scenic drives, short hikes, and guided tours, your one-day Sedona visit can be memorable and manageable for your family before continuing to the Grand Canyon.
