Off roading with pick up truck

Where can we go with our truck driving off road. Not looking for difficult jeep roads

Sedona is famous for its red rock landscapes, and while most off-roading is done with high-clearance 4x4 vehicles or Jeeps, there are still several options suitable for a pick-up truck that don’t require extreme technical skills. You can enjoy scenic drives and mild trails without challenging obstacles.

Here are some off-roading areas and easier trails for a pick-up truck:

  • Bell Rock / Courthouse Butte Loop: Easy dirt road loops around these iconic formations. Mostly smooth dirt, very scenic, suitable for trucks without specialized off-road modifications.
  • Dry Creek Road: A popular dirt road connecting Sedona to Highway 179. Mostly graded dirt with some minor rocks; great for scenic drives and photography stops.
  • Chuckwagon Trail: A mild off-road route with rolling terrain, accessible in a standard 4x4 truck. Avoid during heavy rains as some sections can get muddy.
  • Soldier Pass Road: Easier sections are driveable in a truck, especially the first part. Scenic red rock views, moderate climbs, and less challenging than jeep-only trails.
  • Red Rock Crossing / Boynton Canyon area: Some dirt roads accessible to trucks; very scenic with trailheads and picnic spots. Check for any seasonal closures.

Tips for off-roading in Sedona with a truck:

  • Always check local trail maps and signs — some trails are restricted to high-clearance 4x4 vehicles only.
  • Carry plenty of water and snacks; cell service is patchy in some areas.
  • Drive slowly and carefully over rocky sections; even easy trails can damage tires if not cautious.
  • Watch for hikers and mountain bikers; many off-road trails are shared multi-use paths.
  • Consider stopping by the Sedona Ranger Station for up-to-date trail conditions and maps.

In general, Sedona offers plenty of scenic dirt roads and mild trails that can be enjoyed in a standard pick-up truck without requiring the technical skills or vehicle modifications needed for extreme jeep trails.
