Which 5 star hotel to select in Pudong-Bund area of Shanghai
My wife and I (early 60s) will be in Shanghai for leisure from 30July- 6 August.
Which 5 star hotel should we choose?
We like luxury accommodation, good food (my wife is a vegetarian), shopping in high-end and other shops. We like to see some sights and take the train out of town for sightseeing on a couple of days. We also like promenading and people watching.
We will arrive in Shanghai from Suzhou by car or train and leave from Pudong airport for UK early morning 6 August.
Any suggestions gratefully considered. Many thanks.
For a leisure trip to Shanghai from 30 July to 6 August, staying in the Pudong-Bund area is an excellent choice. This location offers luxury accommodation, proximity to high-end shopping, and easy access to the Bund for promenades and people-watching. It is also convenient for day trips out of the city via Shanghai’s extensive metro and high-speed train network.
Recommended 5-star hotels in the Pudong and Bund area for luxury, dining options, and convenience:
- The Peninsula Shanghai: Located directly on the Bund, offering stunning river views, luxurious rooms, and a high standard of service. Their restaurants include vegetarian-friendly options, and the hotel is within walking distance of high-end shops and the Bund promenade.
- Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund: Offers classic luxury with modern amenities, centrally located near Nanjing Road for shopping. Excellent concierge service can help arrange train trips or day tours, and their restaurants cater well to vegetarian diets.
- Fairmont Peace Hotel: Iconic historic hotel on the Bund with a luxurious atmosphere, fine dining options including vegetarian dishes, and a great location for walking along the Huangpu River and enjoying people-watching.
- Four Seasons Hotel Pudong: Located in the Lujiazui financial district, with panoramic views of the skyline and Bund across the river. Ideal if you prefer a more modern high-rise experience with easy access to shopping malls in Pudong.
- Mandarin Oriental Pudong: Known for spacious rooms, luxury spa, and excellent dining. Convenient for access to both the Bund and metro connections for sightseeing and train excursions.
Practical considerations for your stay:
- Vegetarian Dining: Most 5-star hotels in Shanghai offer vegetarian-friendly menus, but it’s advisable to confirm in advance or request customized meals if needed.
- Shopping: The Bund and nearby Nanjing Road East offer high-end stores and luxury shopping. Pudong malls such as IFC Mall and Super Brand Mall also provide a wide selection of international brands.
- Day Trips: For excursions like Hangzhou or Suzhou, stay near metro lines 2 or 10 for easy access to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. Many hotels can arrange private cars or help book high-speed train tickets.
- Airport Access: Since your departure is from Pudong Airport, staying on the Pudong side can reduce travel time in the early morning. Many hotels offer airport transfer services.
In summary, if you prioritize walking along the Bund, people-watching, and historical luxury, The Peninsula or Waldorf Astoria on the Bund are ideal. For modern high-rise views and proximity to Pudong’s shopping and financial district, Four Seasons or Mandarin Oriental Pudong are excellent choices. All recommended hotels provide the comfort, dining options, and convenience for both city sightseeing and day trips.
