Travel from Shanghai to Xian

I'm currently putting a trip together for next year and wondered if anyone who had made the journey had any thoughts or experiences on getting to Xian from Shanghai. We are looking at both train and flying and are mindful of the extra time we would probably have to spend hanging around airports which may outweigh any time savings . There isn't a great deal in it cost wise so any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Traveling from Shanghai to Xi’an offers two main options: high-speed train and flights. Each has its pros and cons depending on your priorities—time, cost, and convenience.

By High-Speed Train:

  • The high-speed train (G-class) from Shanghai Hongqiao to Xi’an North takes about 6–6.5 hours for direct services. Overnight trains are also available but slower.
  • Trains depart frequently throughout the day, offering flexible timing.
  • Traveling by train allows you to avoid airport security and check-in queues, and you arrive right in the city center rather than a distant airport.
  • Seats are comfortable, with options for second class, first class, and business class. First class gives more space for a slightly higher price.
  • Cost is generally moderate: second class around 550–600 CNY, first class about 900 CNY, and business class roughly 1,500–1,600 CNY.

By Flight:

  • Flights from Shanghai Pudong or Hongqiao to Xi’an Xianyang International Airport take about 2.5 hours in the air.
  • However, you should factor in extra time for airport transfers, check-in, security, and baggage, which can add 2–3 hours total.
  • Flight tickets can be similar in price to high-speed trains, especially if booked in advance; sometimes slightly cheaper or more expensive depending on promotions.
  • Flights are faster in pure travel time, but when including airport procedures, the advantage may reduce to only 1–2 hours.

Additional Tips:

  • If you value comfort, scenic views, and city-center arrivals, the high-speed train is often the preferred choice.
  • If your schedule is tight and you prefer a shorter on-the-move time, flights can save a bit of time.
  • Book train tickets early via the official 12306.cn website or trusted agents to secure preferred seats and travel times.
  • For flights, booking 2–3 months in advance can offer the best fares, and check both Pudong and Hongqiao departures as options.

In summary, for most travelers balancing cost, convenience, and experience, the high-speed train is highly recommended. Flying is viable if you specifically want to shorten transit time, but the extra airport procedures may offset the benefit.
