Hollywood Bowl & minimal site seeing for 2 adults
Hello! I’m heading to LA for 3 days in early August to see a show at Hollywood Bowl. I want to stay somewhere close to a Metro Line as we are trying not to rent a car. I also want the option of going down to Hollywood. We are traveling through LAX. What are your recommendations? I prefer a less kid friendly environment as I’m leaving mine at home!
For a short trip to Los Angeles focused on seeing a show at the Hollywood Bowl and minimal sightseeing, staying near a Metro line is a smart choice, as traffic can be unpredictable and parking near the Bowl and Hollywood can be challenging. You’ll want a hotel that balances access to public transit with a convenient location for evening activities and nightlife suited to adults.
Recommended areas to stay:
- Hollywood / Highland: Close to the Red Line Metro station, which provides easy access downtown and to Universal City. Walking distance to Hollywood Boulevard attractions, restaurants, and bars. This area gives you a central base for minimal sightseeing and nightlife.
- Koreatown: Just a few stops from Hollywood on the Metro Red Line. Known for vibrant dining and nightlife, including late-night Korean BBQ and lounges. Less touristy and more adult-oriented.
- Downtown LA (DTLA): Near multiple Metro lines, giving access to Hollywood, the Bowl (via Metro + short rideshare), and other city attractions. Areas like the Historic Core, Arts District, or near Pershing Square provide good hotel options for adults.
Transportation tips from LAX:
- FlyAway Bus: Convenient, direct, and affordable from LAX to Union Station downtown. From there, connect to the Metro Red Line for Hollywood or Koreatown.
- Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): Direct and convenient, especially if carrying luggage or arriving late. Depending on your hotel location, this may be simpler than navigating Metro with bags.
- Metro Rail: Efficient for your planned activities. Red Line serves Hollywood, Koreatown, Universal City, and connections to other lines downtown.
For the Hollywood Bowl experience:
- Take the Metro Red Line to the Hollywood/Highland station and then a short rideshare or taxi to the Bowl. Alternatively, some hotels offer shuttle services for concerts.
- Arrive early to enjoy pre-show dining or drinks. Consider packing light, as security lines can be long.
- Check for evening shows that allow you to combine your visit with a short walk in Hollywood for nightlife, bars, or casual dining.
Minimal sightseeing suggestions if you want to stretch your legs:
- Hollywood Walk of Fame: Short stroll, easy to combine with dinner or drinks.
- Griffith Observatory: Accessible via short rideshare from your Metro station; offers sunset views and panoramic city views.
- Sunset Boulevard / West Hollywood: Explore bars, lounges, and nightlife for adults without needing a car if staying near the Metro and using short rideshares.
In summary, stay near a Metro-accessible area like Hollywood, Koreatown, or DTLA for convenience. Use Metro or rideshare for LAX transfers, and plan minimal sightseeing around Hollywood or Griffith Observatory. This allows you to enjoy the Hollywood Bowl experience and adult-oriented dining and nightlife without the need for a rental car.
