7-day Sedona and Grand Canyon itinerary
We're planning a trip to Sedona and Grand Canyon in mid-March. Planning to spend 7 nights. We'll arrive in Phoenix in the afternoon, probably spend one night north of Phoenix, and head to Sedona the next day. My question is how to split the rest of the 6 days between Sedona and GC. We are very active but not serious hikers. Any Itinerary? Please advise! Thanks!
For a 7-night trip to Sedona and the Grand Canyon in mid-March, a well-paced itinerary would balance active sightseeing, short hikes, and scenic drives while allowing some relaxation. Since you are active but not serious hikers, this plan focuses on moderate activities and highlights.
Here’s a suggested breakdown:
- Day 1: Arrive in Phoenix in the afternoon. Spend the night north of Phoenix (Scottsdale or nearby) to rest and prepare for the drive to Sedona the next day.
- Day 2: Drive from Phoenix to Sedona (~2 hours). Spend the afternoon exploring the Sedona town center, art galleries, and scenic viewpoints like Airport Mesa.
- Day 3: Moderate Sedona hikes such as Bell Rock or Cathedral Rock for beautiful red rock views. Optionally, take a short scenic drive along Oak Creek Canyon.
- Day 4: More Sedona exploration: hike West Fork Trail (easier trail, family-friendly) or take a Pink Jeep Tour for a fun off-road experience. Sunset at Red Rock Crossing for iconic photos.
- Day 5: Drive to the Grand Canyon South Rim (~2.5–3 hours). Spend the afternoon at viewpoints along Desert View Drive and Mather Point.
- Day 6: Explore the Grand Canyon: easy rim walks, short hikes like the Bright Angel Trail (to the 1.5-mile resthouse) or Rim Trail sections. Optional helicopter or small plane tour for a unique perspective.
- Day 7: Additional Grand Canyon morning activity (viewpoints, gift shops). Begin return drive to Phoenix in the afternoon (~3.5–4 hours), stopping in Flagstaff for lunch or sightseeing.
- Day 8: Departure from Phoenix.
Additional tips:
- Consider staying in Sedona for 3 nights and Grand Canyon for 2 nights to minimize long daily drives.
- Pack layers for March as mornings and evenings can be chilly, especially at the Grand Canyon.
- Plan for some flexibility to allow extra time at viewpoints or short trails you discover along the way.
- Book accommodations in advance, especially at the Grand Canyon South Rim, as mid-March can still see some snow and limited availability.
This itinerary balances Sedona’s scenic hikes and cultural experiences with the iconic Grand Canyon views, without overexertion, making it ideal for active travelers who prefer moderate activity and plenty of photo opportunities.
