Honda Kai or Kaanapali Ali

Want to extend our trip. Are these places a good place to stay ?

Thanks

Good question — yes, both and (often written “Kaʻanapali Alii”) can be very good places to stay — but which one is “best” depends on what you want out of your extended stay (relaxation, convenience, vibe, budget, etc.). Below is a comparison and what to consider.

✅ What works well about Kaʻanapali Alii

  • beachfront location right on Kaanapali Beach — you literally step out to sand and surf, which is ideal if you want easy beach access without complicated logistics.
  • spacious condo-style units (one- and two-bedroom, ~1,500–1,900 sq ft) with full kitchens and laundry — nice for longer stays, flexibility, cooking your own meals, etc.
  • good resort-style amenities: pools, barbecue pavilion, tennis courts, fitness center, spa/whirlpool, shared spaces, and a relaxed atmosphere. Great for families or couples who want comfort and convenience.
  • central location: easy walk or short ride to nearby restaurants, shops, and activities along the Kaanapali path / boardwalk / resort area.

✅ What works well about Honua Kai Resort & Spa

  • newer property — often described as more “modern” in vibe compared with some older condos or resorts.
  • good for families and people wanting resort-style amenities: spacious suites or condo-style units, kitchen facilities, pool/grounds, and if you like a slightly more “resort + amenities + convenience” feel rather than “condo-home” feel.
  • slightly more flexibility if you don’t need a large condo — options like studios or smaller suites might suit smaller parties or simpler stays.

⚠️ What to watch out for / what might tilt you toward one or the other

  • At Kaʻanapali Alii — because each condo is individually owned/managed, the experience can vary significantly between units (decor, furnishings, how well maintained, noise depending on unit orientation).
  • No on-site full restaurant at Kaʻanapali Alii — you’ll rely on nearby shops/restaurants rather than resort dining.
  • At Honua Kai — some guests report drawbacks: e.g. in one review, renters mentioned issues with apartment maintenance or cleanliness.
  • Also at Honua Kai, depending on your unit or season, some amenities (pool-side cabana, towel service, etc.) might be expensive or less convenient than expected.

➡️ Which is better depending on what you want

  • If you want a more relaxed, spacious, “home-away-from-home” feel — with big condo-style accommodations, beach access, comfort and resort-type amenities, and you plan to cook or stay in sometimes, then Kaʻanapali Alii is a very strong choice.
  • If you prefer newer accommodation, somewhat simpler unit options, resort-style amenities, maybe a smaller group or family, and don’t mind possible tradeoffs around unit variability — then Honua Kai Resort & Spa can be a great fit (especially if you value resort pools, convenience, and a “resort hotel + condo hybrid” vibe).
  • If you’re traveling with kids or a bigger group/family, or want flexibility (kitchen + laundry + multiple bedrooms) — Kaʻanapali Alii tends to offer larger units that better accommodate that.
  • If you prefer minimal fuss, newer property, and don’t need a huge condo — Honua Kai might feel lighter and easier, especially for shorter stays.

My view / what I’d pick if I were you

If I were extending my stay on Maui and wanted a comfortable, relaxed, beach-front base that balances convenience and flexibility — I’d pick Kaʻanapali Alii. For me, the size of the condo, beachfront location, and amenities make it a “home-base” ideal for several days. Honua Kai would be my second pick — good for shorter visits or if I prioritize a resort-hotel style over space and flexibility.

All that said — whichever you pick, you’ll be in one of the more popular, well-respected areas of West Maui (Kaʻanapali), with access to great beaches, restaurants, and amenities.
