Snorkel trip question
Hi all - I’ve narrowed down our snorkel trip options to coral gardens based on time, date availability, etc. to either an am snorkel with quicksilver or an afternoon snorkel with four winds or Malolo.
It seems like all have decent reviews. Any thoughts as to which one would be best for a family with kids who have snorkeled in Hawaii before? Is there a difference in how much we will see in the afternoon v morning? I’ve read that the afternoons seem less crowded on the boats which is appealing. All seem to have a fair number of guests.
For a family with kids who have snorkeled in Hawaii before, all three options you mentioned — Quicksilver, Four Winds, and Malolo — generally provide good snorkeling experiences at Coral Gardens. The choice between morning and afternoon trips mostly comes down to water conditions, crowd levels, and personal preference.
Here are some points to consider:
- Morning vs. Afternoon Visibility: Mornings often offer calmer waters and better visibility because winds tend to pick up as the day progresses. If your kids enjoy seeing a lot of fish and coral detail, a morning trip might provide slightly clearer conditions.
- Crowd Levels: Afternoon trips are often less crowded, as many families opt for morning departures. A less crowded boat can mean more space to move around and a more relaxed experience.
- Boat Size and Amenities: Quicksilver tends to have larger catamarans with more amenities, which can be more comfortable for families with kids. Four Winds and Malolo may offer a slightly more intimate experience, but still with all safety equipment and guides.
- Wildlife Activity: Some snorkelers report that fish and marine life can be more active in the morning, though this can vary day to day. Afternoon trips might offer a quieter experience with fewer boats in the water.
Other practical considerations:
- Think about your family’s schedule — an early morning trip might require waking up quite early, whereas an afternoon trip allows a more relaxed start.
- Check if lunch or snacks are included; some boats provide them, which can influence comfort, especially for kids.
- Consider sea conditions and check the daily weather forecast — sometimes afternoon winds make the ride bumpier.
In summary, if your priority is slightly better water visibility and the classic calm-morning snorkeling experience, Quicksilver’s morning trip is ideal. If your family prefers fewer people on board and a more relaxed departure, an afternoon trip with Four Winds or Malolo is a great choice. Both options are safe, well-reviewed, and should provide an enjoyable experience for your kids.
