Additional Tips for Solo Hiking in Boulder:

  • Start early in the morning to avoid crowds, especially on popular trails like Chautauqua and Mount Sanitas.
  • Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat; elevation and sun exposure can be more intense than in Pennsylvania.
  • Cell reception can be spotty on some trails, so let someone know your hiking plan if hiking alone.
  • Wear sturdy shoes with good traction; trails can be rocky and uneven.
  • Check trail conditions before you go, as some sections may be muddy or closed after heavy rain.

For your first visit and solo hike, Chautauqua to Royal Arch or the Mount Sanitas Loop are excellent choices: scenic, moderate, and close to town. Green Mountain and Bear Peak offer more elevation and longer views if you feel adventurous, while Flatirons Vista is a nice easier option for a relaxed hike.
