Water Falls
Getting excited about our visit. We have 8 am timed entries for Bear Lake end of August. We are in decent shape but coming from East Coast so not use to the elevation. We would love to hike to see waterfalls which trail would you suggest for one of our days. Thank you!
Visiting Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) with an 8:00 am timed entry at Bear Lake gives you a wonderful head start to explore some of the park’s most scenic waterfalls. Since you mentioned you’re coming from the East Coast and want to account for elevation, choosing moderate trails with rewarding views is ideal.
Recommended Waterfall Hikes Near Bear Lake:
- Alberta Falls via Glacier Gorge Trail
Distance: ~1.6 miles round trip from Glacier Gorge Trailhead
Elevation Gain: ~200 feet
Description: This is a classic waterfall hike that is moderate and well-maintained. The trail begins at the Glacier Gorge Trailhead (accessible from Bear Lake parking area) and leads to Alberta Falls, a picturesque waterfall perfect for photos. The trail is manageable even at higher elevation if you take it slowly.
- Ouzel Falls via Wild Basin Trail
Distance: ~5.4 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: ~1,000 feet
Description: Starting from the Wild Basin Trailhead (a short drive from Bear Lake area), this trail takes you past several smaller cascades before reaching the impressive Ouzel Falls. The hike is moderately challenging due to elevation gain but is very scenic, following streams and forested areas.
- Loch Vale / Sky Pond Approach
Distance: ~7 miles round trip to The Loch
Elevation Gain: ~1,000 feet
Description: For those wanting a longer and more rewarding waterfall experience, this trail begins near the Bear Lake area and passes multiple cascades like Alberta Falls and The Loch. If you turn around at The Loch rather than continuing to Sky Pond, it keeps the hike within a full-day but not overly strenuous.
Tips for Hiking in RMNP with Elevation:
- Start slowly to allow your body to acclimate; even moderate trails can feel more strenuous at ~8,000–10,000 feet.
- Carry water and take frequent breaks.
- Start your hike right after your 8:00 am entry to enjoy quieter trails and avoid mid-morning crowds.
- Bring layers as morning temperatures can be cool, especially near waterfalls where mist and shade lower the perceived temperature.
- Footwear with good traction is recommended since some waterfall trails can be wet or rocky.
Overall, Alberta Falls via Glacier Gorge Trail is the most accessible and rewarding for a half-day hike with waterfall views. If you feel comfortable and want a longer adventure, Ouzel Falls or the lower Sky Pond approach offer additional waterfall vistas and beautiful alpine scenery.
