Question about Amtrak to Santa Barbara

I’m taking Amtrak from LA to Santa Barbara.

I’m NOT taking the Pacific Surliner.

Is there a better side of the train to sit on for the view?

If you are traveling by Amtrak from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara on a route other than the Pacific Surfliner, the scenic value is still quite good, but it depends on the exact train service and the time of day.

Generally, the route along the coast gives you views of the ocean and coastline, though not all trains hug the coastline as closely as the Surfliner does. Here are some points to consider:

  • For westbound trains leaving LA in the morning or early afternoon, sitting on the left side (port side) of the train tends to provide better ocean views as the train runs along the coast for portions of the trip.
  • For eastbound trains returning from Santa Barbara to LA, the right side (starboard side) generally offers more coastal views.
  • Not all segments are along the water; some portions go inland, so views can vary. Windows on both sides will offer glimpses of hills, farmland, and small towns.

Additional tips:

  • Try to reserve a window seat in advance if possible, as it ensures unobstructed views.
  • If you’re on a coach car, the seats are fixed, so plan early for your preferred side.
  • Check the schedule and train type when booking, as some Amtrak services may use different rail lines that have more or less coastline exposure.

While not as iconic as the Pacific Surfliner experience, choosing your side strategically can still give you scenic views of the California coast and surrounding areas during your trip.
