Hotel/B&B for first timers
First time for hubby and me to visit. Going late September. We will have a car but prefer to be in a good location for walking. I’m currently looking at Perry Lane hotel, Hamilton Turner, Belwether, and The Marshall House, but open to recommendations.
Good, comfortable mattresses are a must, and excellent service/attention to detail preferred. Warm and welcoming. Thanks!
Savannah is a wonderful destination with its charming historic district, and it's great that you’re planning to stay in a walkable area! Based on your preferences for good mattresses, excellent service, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, here are some suggestions that align with what you're looking for:
The hotels and B&Bs you’re considering are all excellent choices, but I’ll also offer a few additional recommendations and insights on each option to help you decide:
- Perry Lane Hotel – This is a newer, upscale hotel with modern amenities but plenty of Southern charm. It offers a very stylish atmosphere with great service, and its location is perfect for walking to the historic district, River Street, and many restaurants and shops. The rooms are spacious, and the service is known to be excellent, with attention to detail. The rooftop bar offers great views of the city. If you like a combination of modern luxury with Southern hospitality, this is a fantastic choice.
- Hamilton Turner Inn – A beautiful and historic bed and breakfast located right in the heart of the historic district, Hamilton Turner Inn offers a cozy, romantic atmosphere with wonderful service. The rooms are elegant and comfortable, with great attention to detail, and the inn is known for its hospitality. It’s perfect for first-time visitors since it’s walking distance to Forsyth Park, the waterfront, and all the charming streets in between.
- Belmond Charleston Place (formerly Belwether) – While this is technically in Charleston, South Carolina, if you were considering options further out, Belmond Charleston Place offers a luxurious, classic experience with excellent service. However, for Savannah, if you meant Belmond, I'd suggest focusing on more direct choices for Savannah itself.
- The Marshall House – A wonderful historic hotel located on Broughton Street, The Marshall House combines old-world charm with modern comfort. It's known for its excellent customer service, and the beds are very comfortable. The location is prime for walking around, and you’re close to all the main attractions like City Market and the Riverwalk. It also offers a complimentary wine-and-cheese reception, which adds to the warm, welcoming atmosphere.
In addition to the options you’ve mentioned, here are a couple more boutique hotels and B&Bs in Savannah that are well-loved for their cozy atmosphere, great mattresses, and fantastic service:
- The Gastonian – A charming, romantic bed and breakfast located a few blocks from Forsyth Park. It’s intimate, with only a few rooms, and it’s perfect for a more quiet and personal experience. The staff goes above and beyond to make you feel at home, and the property itself is beautiful. They also offer a wine and cheese reception in the evening, which adds to the welcoming atmosphere.
- The Kehoe House – Another historic option, The Kehoe House is located near the River Street area, offering a lovely experience with elegant rooms and excellent service. The beds are comfortable, and the service is very attentive. The location is also great for walking, and it’s close to the riverfront, historic squares, and many restaurants.
- Andaz Savannah – If you’re looking for a more modern hotel with great service, Andaz Savannah offers stylish accommodations with a great location near City Market. While it’s more contemporary, it still offers a warm, welcoming vibe and is a great place to relax after a day of exploring the historic district.
All of these options provide a mix of Southern hospitality, comfort, and excellent service, making them ideal for a first-time visit to Savannah. Since you have a car, you'll also be able to explore nearby areas, but these properties are in excellent locations for walking around the city, so you’ll be able to enjoy Savannah’s historic district with ease.
For your September trip, I would recommend booking as early as possible, as Savannah is a popular destination, especially around the time of festivals and events. Enjoy your stay, and congratulations on your visit to such a lovely city!
