Power adapters HK and Macau
Will the same adapter work in Macau as in HK, or do I need to organise a different one for each place? Coming from Australia, Thank you :)
Both Hong Kong and Macau use the same type of power plugs and voltage standards, so a single adapter will work for both destinations. Coming from Australia, you will need a suitable travel adapter to convert your plug type to the local standard.
Key details:
- Plug Type: Hong Kong and Macau both use Type G plugs (three rectangular pins in a triangular formation), the same as the UK style.
- Voltage & Frequency: Both regions operate on 220V at 50Hz. Most modern Australian devices like phone chargers, laptops, and cameras are dual voltage (100–240V), so they will work safely with just a plug adapter.
- Adapter Needed: You will need a Type G adapter to convert from the Australian Type I plug to the local Type G socket. A single adapter is sufficient for both Hong Kong and Macau.
Additional tips:
- Check your devices to confirm they are compatible with 220V. If any device is single voltage only, you will need a voltage converter, though most modern electronics handle 100–240V automatically.
- If you plan to charge multiple devices at once, consider bringing a small travel power strip with Type G plugs to avoid carrying multiple adapters.
- Adapters and travel power strips are widely available in airports, convenience stores, and electronics shops in both Hong Kong and Macau, but buying one before travel is easier and often cheaper.
In summary, one Type G plug adapter will cover both Hong Kong and Macau, and you should have no problem using your Australian devices with it.
