Octopus card

Hi everyone . If i only wanted to use the Octopus card for transport on metro and buses in Hong Kong, for a five day stay how much approximately should i put on the card ? . Also, can it be used on the Star Ferry.

Thanks in advance .

The Octopus card is very convenient for getting around Hong Kong on the MTR (metro), buses, trams, and even some ferries. For a five-day stay where you only plan to use it for public transport, here’s a rough guide:

On average, a single MTR trip within central Hong Kong costs between HKD 5–15 depending on distance, while buses are usually HKD 4–12 per trip. If you plan to use public transport 3–5 times a day, a top-up of around HKD 200–250 should be more than sufficient for five days.

  • Day trips across the city: 3–5 MTR/bus trips/day ≈ HKD 40–60/day
  • Total for 5 days ≈ HKD 200–250
  • Octopus card deposit: HKD 50 (refundable if you return the card at the end of your stay)

Regarding the Star Ferry, yes, the Octopus card can be used for both the Central–Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai–Tsim Sha Tsui routes. It’s tapped in and out just like on the metro or bus, making it very convenient for quick trips across Victoria Harbour.

Additional tips:

  • You can buy an Octopus card at the airport, MTR stations, or convenience stores like 7-Eleven or Circle K.
  • Keep an eye on your balance; topping up is easy at machines or convenience stores.
  • If you plan a few taxi rides or attractions that don’t accept the Octopus card, it’s good to have some cash on hand as well.

In summary, HKD 200–250 top-up plus the HKD 50 deposit should cover metro, bus, and Star Ferry rides comfortably for five days.
