Shenzhen Electronics Market and transit to Hong Kong query

Hi pals,

We will be travelling to China for a 10 day trip and want to cover Shenzhen/ HK on the last leg (30 Dec- 2 Jan). Had a couple of queries:

1) Would 1 night be ok to cover Shenzhen (mostly electronics market). Plan to arrive on 30th afternoon, but transit to HK on 31st afternoon for New Year Eve.

2) Any market closures to expect on 30/31 or 1?

3) Best way to transit into HK? Are taxis available?

Thank you so much for your kind help

For your short Shenzhen visit focusing on electronics markets, one night can be sufficient if you plan efficiently, but it will be a fast-paced schedule. Shenzhen’s electronics markets are concentrated mainly in Huaqiangbei, which can be explored in an afternoon and evening if you move quickly.

Regarding market closures:

  • December 30th: Most markets operate as usual.
  • December 31st: Markets generally remain open, though some smaller shops may close earlier due to New Year preparations.
  • January 1st: Expect some closures or reduced hours for smaller vendors; major electronics malls usually stay open but with fewer staff.

For transit into Hong Kong:

  • By MTR (recommended for convenience): From Shenzhen, you can take the metro to the Luohu or Futian border crossings and cross into Hong Kong. After immigration, you can continue on the Hong Kong MTR network to your destination. This is usually faster than road transport during peak holiday times.
  • By taxi: Taxis can take you to the border, but you cannot cross the border in a mainland taxi. You would need to switch to a Hong Kong taxi on the other side, which makes this option less direct and more expensive.
  • Shenzhen Bay or other coach services: Some shuttle buses operate between Shenzhen and Hong Kong (e.g., Shenzhen Bay to Tsim Sha Tsui), which is convenient if you have luggage or prefer a direct route.

In summary, one night in Shenzhen is feasible if your goal is just the electronics markets, and using the MTR or official shuttle buses is the easiest way to transit to Hong Kong, especially around New Year when traffic can be heavy.
