Trip Report

We made our 11th trip to Alaska mid September. We started in Ketchikan and ended up in Seattle. Most of the time was spent in the Great Bear Rainforest in BC.

This report features: RAIN.

Taking a ferry from the airport was a first and I enjoyed it.

Fortunately, our one whole day was mostly sunny and cool and perfect for walking. We explored on foot and had a great meal at the New York Cafe. Wonderful halibut! We stayed at Cape Fox Lodge, It was comfortable and clean. The restaurant had good food. Service was pleasant.

We were in Ketchikan the day the skies opened, and left, according to their fire department, 7.66 inches of rain. I have never seen that much rain anywhere. I have never seen rain swallow the world.

One day in Ketchikan was plenty, even with good weather. I can't imagine what it is like when several large ships are in port.

The moral of the story is take good rain gear. I had it, used it, and will use it again!

Your trip report from Alaska sounds like a memorable adventure, particularly with your time in Ketchikan and the Great Bear Rainforest. Mid-September can be a challenging time weather-wise in Southeast Alaska, so your emphasis on rain is very fitting. It’s clear that despite the heavy precipitation, you were able to make the most of your experience.

Highlights from your report include:

  • Ferry from the airport: This was a first for you and seems to have been an enjoyable way to start your journey, giving a unique perspective on the waterways and surrounding scenery.
  • Exploring on foot: Your one sunny, cool day allowed for comfortable walking and a chance to enjoy local dining, such as your meal at the New York Cafe, where the halibut was a standout.
  • Accommodation: Cape Fox Lodge provided a clean and comfortable stay with good service and dining options, which is always important for a smooth trip.

The heavy rain in Ketchikan is a classic part of visiting this region. Receiving 7.66 inches in a single day is extreme, even by local standards, and your vivid description emphasizes just how intense the weather can be:

  • Visiting during such conditions highlights the need for excellent rain gear, as you noted. Waterproof clothing, boots, and layers are essential for comfort and enjoyment.
  • Even with good weather, one full day in Ketchikan is typically enough to explore, especially given the town's size and density of attractions. During peak cruise ship days, the area can become quite crowded, which can limit mobility and enjoyment.

Key takeaways for future travelers to this region:

  • Expect rain and plan accordingly—bringing high-quality rain gear is non-negotiable.
  • Short stays in towns like Ketchikan are often sufficient, especially if you plan to explore more remote areas like the Great Bear Rainforest.
  • Take advantage of sunny days for outdoor walks and sightseeing, as the weather can change quickly.
  • Dining locally, such as enjoying fresh halibut, enhances the experience and makes the trip more memorable.

Overall, your trip demonstrates the charm and challenges of Southeast Alaska in September. Proper preparation, flexibility with the weather, and a focus on small highlights like local cuisine and scenic walks make such trips enjoyable despite the frequent rainfall.
