Grand Canyon & Sedona at Christmas

We are a couple of recent empty nesters, and want to experience something new . We are considering a trip to the Grand Canyon and Sedona around the Christmas holidays, esp since the weather would be so much more comfortable and less crowded than the hot summer months. Would this be a wise time to go? Any advice and/or itinerary suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

Visiting the Grand Canyon and Sedona around Christmas can be an excellent choice, especially if you prefer cooler weather and smaller crowds compared with the busy summer months. The temperatures are typically mild during the day, though mornings and evenings can be chilly, particularly at the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, where it may even snow.

Here are some considerations and tips for your trip:

  • Accommodations: Book early, as holiday travel can fill hotels and lodges, especially at the Grand Canyon Village and Sedona. Many places offer festive holiday décor and cozy amenities.
  • Weather: Dress in layers and be prepared for cold mornings and potential snow at higher elevations. Sedona’s daytime temperatures are usually comfortable for walking and sightseeing.
  • Activities: Sedona is perfect for scenic drives, short hikes, and art gallery visits. At the Grand Canyon, sunrise and sunset viewpoints are less crowded and spectacular in winter light.

Sample 4-5 day itinerary:

  • Day 1: Arrive in Sedona, explore the Red Rock Scenic Byway, Bell Rock, and Chapel of the Holy Cross. Enjoy a casual dinner at a local restaurant.
  • Day 2: Morning hike in Sedona (Cathedral Rock or West Fork Trail), afternoon visiting Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village. Optional sunset jeep tour for a festive twist.
  • Day 3: Drive to Grand Canyon South Rim (about 2.5–3 hours). Stop at viewpoints along Oak Creek Canyon if desired. Explore Desert View Drive and watch the sunset over the canyon.
  • Day 4: Optional sunrise at Mather Point, short rim hikes like South Kaibab to Ooh Aah Point. Visit the Grand Canyon Visitor Center and nearby historic areas.
  • Day 5: Return to Sedona or Phoenix for departure, with optional stops at scenic overlooks along the way.

Additional advice:

  • Make reservations for any holiday dining, as popular spots may fill quickly.
  • If you enjoy photography, winter light offers some of the best opportunities for capturing red rock formations and canyon vistas.
  • Check road conditions, particularly if there is snow at the Grand Canyon; the roads are generally plowed, but caution is advised.

Overall, visiting in December offers a quieter, more relaxed experience with comfortable temperatures in Sedona and dramatic winter scenery at the Grand Canyon, making it a wise and rewarding choice for your holiday trip.
